Thank you so much Dee! I'm touched that you remembered! 7 months...it's the longest that I have gone without a drink since I was 18 years old. I turn 40 next month. Almost 22 years I had a relationship with alcohol. If I break it up I'd say that the first 5-6 years I was an amateur drinker and just having fun with my friends. Around that 6 year mark is when my wife and I were married. We had our first home and for a couple years before kids I remember drinking a higher quantity of beer but still not thinking anything of it. 8 years in we were expecting our first child and this is about the time I first recall switching to vodka (because others couldn't smell it...right!) and hiding it. 2 years later I remember pounding a beer in the hospital parking lot before going in for the birth of our second. 3 years after that was when I first attended an AA meeting because my wife was threatening to leave me and I was drinking 5-6 nights a week. I stopped drinking for about 6 months. Over the last 6-7 years it's been cycles of sobriety mixed with drinking. I always thought I could control it, hide it, that it wasn't impacting anyone but me and occasionally making my wife mad. I can't believe how wrong I was. Can't believe I didn't know that my kids noticed even when I thought I was totally hiding it. Didn't notice how it was holding me back in so many ways. Last July after passing out in the grass behind center field under my canopy at my kids baseball game I remember pulling out my phone and purchasing This Naked Mind to read. I drank maybe one or two more times before I finally said enough. Read the book twice and committed to myself that I would stop. 7 months. I don't miss it, I don't think about it often at all. In the mornings I check in here and write my daily affirmations. It's been a huge weight off of my shoulders.
I hope all of you are finding joy in the small wins regardless if you have 7 weeks, 7 months, or 7 years under your belt. Wishing you the best.
