There is a link above the images that will play the "Sounds." If that's not it, you can search the Cornell site for other owls. If it was really screeching, try the Screech Owl.
Nice catch!

I'm voting for the Eastern Screech Owl. Not so horned and not a hooter. A beauty.
The Cornell site is my fav for anything bird.
I'm sorry to have been away from here so long -- I failed to subscribe to the last installment and thought it can gone silent It's been fun catching up though. But there are many parts of this that I didn't understand:

there's a 24/7/365 MST channel on my Roku box?
I think MST is "Mystery Science Theater" - it's a campy old TV show

ROKU is a device that streams internet video to your TV. I love my ROKU.
That owl looks to me to be too big to be a Screech Owl. (That was an exhausting sentence to try to put together and not sure I succeeded.)

OK everyone I found the answer——- it IS a great horned owl, and they do screech—-a hunger screech. And they who who who hoot at night.
And with that at 0156 in the morning I am going to sleep

I recently heard two Great Horned Owls calling back and forth to each other in a forest of Douglas Pines. Who WHO who who-whoo. I stood for 15 minutes or so, they were on opposite sides of me. I so wanted one to fly by...I couldn't spot them in the trees.
This is the time of year when the young are first on their own and trying to get it right on the hunting. I bet hunger is a real problem!
I'm glad you figured it out, Free! Very lucky spotting.

Scroll down for several interesting vocalizations from GHO. The one labelled "whinny" may be like what you heard.
