Dear bimini went to the zoo yesterday and looked as smews. Yes, they are diving ducks – the Latin “mergellus albellus” means “little white duck” and the Latin “mergo” is a verb for ducking, plunging, or dipping. Way more than any of us wanted to know.
bimini saw flamingos at the zoo, too. She said they looked happy! “They were bathing and preening and stretching their wings, flapping about. Lovely. Showy. Flamboyant.”
If you feel like it, don’t hesitate to preen a little, yourself. Show off your sobriety -- it looks great on you!

The flamingos were my favorite thing at the zoo yesterday. It was sunny, they were happy.
They suffer in the long cool winters. I love it when I can see them acting like the tropical birds they are.
I like how they stand on one leg, too. Why, though? If you've got two good legs, it seems more stable. It must be for thermoregulation, I would guess - but don't quote me on that! I mean, they get all tucked up. Cute.
