Wait; what???!!!! Mashed Potato Day followed by Chocolate Day???!!!! (There really is a Hog Heaven!!!!).
I missed check-in yesterday, but I'm still sober. I completed my Eighth Step list and discussed it with my sponsor. So now I'm officially on Step Nine. Ahh... the fun step. In that I am looking forward to be freed from my guilt, shame, and remorse!!!

Home after our trip, my cats are all cuddled on the bed with me. It's early for me to check in, but feeling like bedtime can't come soon enough. I'll sign in for my next 24 hours of recovery, thanks to my HP & AA.

Counting down to Halloween night. #4: Fairies and Elves. Elves and Fairies. Monsters? What else would you call them? They’re definitely supernatural. Like demons, they’ll cause you mischief and harm just out of pure malice. Cross them and you’ll be sorry. Plus, they earn an extra half-point on my rating scale for being so very, very attractive.
Terry Pratchett always gets his monsters right, and he’s not a fan of elves. In the Discworld novels, elves hunt humans for sport. Pratchett writes,
Elves typically spin their attractions onto the opposite sex. Here’s Keats, “La Belle Dame Sans Merci”:
La Dame takes the knight to her elfin grotto, feeds him & kisses him, and then abandons him while he sleeps:
But in his dreams, Poor fella. The fairies got him. Ladies watch out, too – fairies like to steal your children and they'll dance you to death! Here’s a drawing of Susanna Clarke’s Gentleman With Thistle-Down Hair, a male fairy who seduces many an English lady in the novel Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.
The worst bit about elves & fairies is not the harm they do, but how much they make us want it, over & over again. It’s always a fun time for the fairy, even though you’re bleeding in an emergency room somewhere. Last words from Terry Pratchett: “They'd smash up the world if they thought it would make a pretty noise.”
Look past the glamour, and live another sober 24 hours to tell the tale!

Terry Pratchett always gets his monsters right, and he’s not a fan of elves. In the Discworld novels, elves hunt humans for sport. Pratchett writes,
Elves are wonderful. They provoke wonder.
Elves are marvellous. They cause marvels.
Elves are fantastic. They create fantasies.
Elves are glamorous. They project glamour.
Elves are enchanting. They weave enchantment.
Elves are terrific. They beget terror.

I met a lady in the meads,
Full beautiful—a faery’s child,
Her hair was long, her foot was light,
And her eyes were wild.
Full beautiful—a faery’s child,
Her hair was long, her foot was light,
And her eyes were wild.
But in his dreams,
I saw pale kings and princes too,
Pale warriors, death-pale were they all;
They cried—“La Belle Dame sans Merci
Thee hath in thrall!”

They cried—“La Belle Dame sans Merci
Thee hath in thrall!”
