First thunderous weather of the year (can't quite call it a thunderstorm... it's just a little rumbling outside) makes for good sleeping.

Rickh54 is sharing his story today. It's amazing how similar all of our stories are and this
is yet another one I can relate to. Rickh54 Celebrates 6 months today woohoo!

My name is Rick and I am an alcoholic.

Now that we have that out of the way, Deeker asked
me to share my story of how I got to this point.

First time drunk was at 14. 5 buddies skipped school and hung out at one of the houses and
drank all the Dad's liquor. Felt crappy for a day or two, but it sure was fun.
High school extra curricular activity was focused on getting drunk.

By the time I finished college at 23, I was drinking 4 or 5 nights a week. Living downtown Vancouver
and drinking was the main focus of our entertainment.

Married at 27, first of three kids at 29.The responsibility of the kids, house, job, wife etc kept
me close to home and under control. However, I travelled with work for a couple of days almost
every week.

Thats when I did my serious drinking. I would sit in the hotel bar every night. Sometimes I would
miss a flight home on purpose so that I could sit in the airport bar for another couple of hours.
I spent 12 years travelling around the world, so my drinking activity increased.

Never missed a day of work, never missed a baseball game or a ballet recital.

I was a great dad and husband. My wife and I enjoyed our social life and our friends. Most of
whom were also drinkers. My kids are now 26 to 30, so for the last 10 or 12 years my day to day
parenting duties have wained. I didn't have to be home all the time to keep an eye on them.

They grew up and the dog died. We had free time all of a sudden. I chose to spend my free time
sitting at the local pub. Or drinking beer at home by myself. The volume increased over the years.

If I had one, I would have 12. Sometimes more. I planned my drinking when my wife was at book
club or Ladies golf night. Dump all the empties before she came home. Get into bed and to sleep
before she came home. You know the routine.

We would pick our vacation hotels in Mexico based on a swim up bar. We were in NYC in May last
year for 5 nights. I was drunk for 4 of them. I love bars, high end, dives, doesnt matter. I love to
sit in a bar and get wasted.

My focus over the last few years was when and where I could drink a box of beer. Every bartender
in town had my beer poured as I walked in the front door. Norm from Cheers ring a bell? I drank when
I had a great day at work, I drank when I had a crappy day. I drank with buddies, I drank alone.

Fast forward to last November. Had my annual physical. Dr. ordered a liver blood test on my request.

Results showed a red flag. He called me to discuss. First time I was honest with anyone about how
much and often I drank. I cried in his office, but it was a big relief to finally admit to someone and
myself that I had a problem. Decided that day that I would not drink again. 6 months sober on May 12.
I am now 60 years old and I figure 45 years of binge drinking is enough for this lifetime.

My three kids and their families mean far more to me than my beer. I see my two little grandsons
almost every day. Papa has taught the 3 year old things that only Papas can teach. ( such as how
to pee in the back yard, how to hitch a trailer to the truck, how to spit without getting it on your
chin, slingshots). I decided that I will be at the gym for their High School graduation and if I God
willing for their weddings.

My wife of 33 years and my family have been my biggest cheerleaders. I would be dead by now without my
wife at my side throughout this journey.

SR has been a huge part of my success to this point. Can't beat learning from the veterans.

I understood quickly that I was not unique or alone. We are all on the same train. I don't post as often
as I did in the early weeks but I read often, every day. The 24 hour club has made me accountable.
I do not want to let you down.

I like myself again. I don't have to hide or lie about my whereabouts. My liver is in fine shape once again.
I also have about $1000 a month extra in my jeans.

I wish all of you the courage to stick with your recovery. Life is tough enough sober. Adding an alcohol
addiction to the mix is insanity. Keep working your plan, talk to your supporters, change your old
habits, etc etc. You have heard all that before, but it does help. Thanks for listening.
Rick

Thank You so much Rickh54, another story of great hope! Congratulations on 6 months!
