Hi, My name is Dan you may know me as AG2013,
I want to thank deeker for asking me to share my story on my path to sobriety.
I’m an alcoholic, binge drinker, alcohol abuser, drunk. I accept all the names. I come
from a good family. Great parents and one of five great siblings.
My relationship with alcohol began my first year of college. I found the beer keg and
bottles of Tequila and a lot of fun- 3 to 4 nights a week.
I loved it so much I forgot why I was at school -to graduate- which I never did.
Instead, weekend drinking and weekly binges got me only crappy jobs and a lot of
trouble for the next 10-20 years of my life.
It contributed to my wife leaving after 14 years of marriage, jeopardized loosing the
respect of my 2 kids and my friends, and almost losing my current job (which is a great job).
Two DUI’s, one drunk in public, and a nasty fight with a cop landed me in jail a few times.
It is truly a miracle I am still alive today.
One night I was watching a baseball game on my 7th beer. I was not only bloated by
the beer but bloated by the buzz. It just didn’t feel good anymore and was not fun.
I sat the beer down and asked myself “what for?” Why am I doing this? That was the
last time I had a drink- 7 months ago.
30 years of very heavy drinking (typical weekend drinking was starting off with 10-15
beers then hit a bottle of red wine and end off drinking down a half bottle of vodka,
every Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun night!) was taking a huge toll on my health.
I knew I was going to self destruct if I didn’t stop. I found on the web-“Living Sober
Sucks (But living drunk sucks more)" by Mark Tuschel.
I related to Mark very well and after reading his advice for a couple a months I was
able to stay off the booze and “ease” through withdrawal. I had joined SR too
and began coming to the 24 hr club, where deeker and the entire crew were great
at welcoming new arrivals.
My 7 months of sobriety has been a wild ride with many ups and downs but the
good times are worth it.
I began running 5k and 10K racing events which have been great physically and mentally
and a new passion. I’m even signed up for the San Francisco Marathon (1/2) this July!
I can’t wait.
I hope everyone stays strong and focused on making your lives better. We all know that
booze and drugs lead to destruction. Good luck to everyone.
Dan
Thanks Dan that was awesome, what an inspiration you are!!

Thanks Dan for sharing your story. So glad you are healthy and enjoying your life now. Couldn't agree with you more - A drunk life is no life at all.
