I hope you will feel better soon, Deek and Venuscat
Thank you so much for this post, it's so true.
I have no alcohol and drugs at home. It's my safe zone.
Before I leave house I make sure my guards are up.
When I go to dinner or some places where peoble drink
I check first that my mental defense line stands, if I weel weak
I wont't go. Reading SR daily, 3 meetings per week, calling sponsor daily and meditation
daily (thats by far the hardest thing for me) help me to build a strong defense line.
The enemy is powerful so I need to defend efficiently. At the beginning of my recovery
I took Antabuse as well, because I couldn't trust myself, the Monster's voice was there all
the time. Now I can handle the Monster much better... but I know he's very patient.
Happy sober and clean sunday everyone.

My Little Army
Today I have a little defense system, a little army of reinforcements in place.
For example my little defense strategy includes going to a couple NA meetings
a week, going to church once a week, Going to a celebrate recovery
meeting once a week, service to the 24 club and time in prayer.
This combination works really great for me. Now I may let up and not
do every single one of those things all the time but overall I usually do at
least a combination of 3 of those things a week and the 24 club every day..
If I had enough time to be wasted on drugs and alcohol and I certainly
did as I spent most of my days doing that, then I have enough time to
dedicate to my recovery.
These reinforcements keep me positive so I am not in a bad place spiritually
and emotionally. Plus I don't have a lot of time to sit around and just think.
I am far less likely to fall into anger, self pity, resentment, etc.
Those things will lead me to that stinkin thinkin that leads to a drink or a drug.
Now if I slip up and slowly start dropping my defense, stop doing those things
that keep me spiritually and emotionally fit. I know that my attitude is also
slipping and that a relapse may not be far behind.
A lone addict or alcoholic is in bad company. We need to have some sort
of defense in place whether it be AA, Smart, RR, SR, Counseling, NA, IOP etc
Only you can find the right combination for you.
Some need more more of a defense , some people need less.
Relapse is a possibilty but it doesn't have to become a reality. I do what I need
to do to feed and prepare my army for a daily battle.
To live comfortably and reasonably happy without temptation.
What is your defense today? If your army consists of you and your will power
alone and you are constantly fighting temptation it's likely you have a very weak defense.
And if you are someone who keeps slipping, that very well may be why.
The best defense is a good offense.
Do we need to build on that today? Only you know if you are honest with yourself. Are you stuck?

Hope you feel better Deek! On day 41 at 4:40am in Costa Rica. Still dark outside.... This time around I am not using AA as a defense...although it did keep me sober for 8 years (1st time) 3 years (2nd time) and 4 years (last time). Following my last relapse of about 2 1/2-3 years, I know that accountability is important, but this time I am trying AVRT, SR...and remembering what I have learned during my years in AA as a base....
