Taming The Tongue
Ya know we can do a lot of damage with our tongues.
Sometimes irreversible damage. Sometimes the things we say can be more hurtful than the
things we do.
I can remember many a Thanksgiving or Christmas where a couple of family members including
myself have a few drinks and suddenly we are saying things we would not normally say to
each other.
There is no filter. I love to read the Bible and it often makes reference to this. It says Consider
what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.
With our tongues we can start fires.
It says All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and
have been tamed by man, but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly
poison.
How true that can be. Our words can lift someone up and they can tear someone down.
There was a rhyme I remember as a little girl that went like this " Sticks and stone can break
my bones but words can never hurt me"
I beg to differ. Words sometimes hurt more and stay with us longer. How many of us are secretly
holding onto a resentment towards someone because of what they said years ago.
Maybe they said we needed to lose weight, or we could have done more with our lives but
we became drunks.
I can remember something my Mom said to me when I was about 25. She said she wished that I
had turned out as good as her friends kids. She said I was a lush!
Was it right? Probably not. Was it true? Probably.
Was it necessary? No
How many times have we ourselves sparked a fire and told someone off or criticized them in
a hurtful manner?
We can do so much damage with our tongues and once it is out of our mouths we can't pull it
back, the damage is done no matter how hard we try to say I am sorry.
Today, before reacting and saying something we will undoubtedly regret at a later date, let's just
take pause and ask ourselves "Is this a fire that is worth starting?"
Those unkind words will always come back to bite us in the butt at a later date, maybe even years
and years down the road.
Do I need to tame my tongue today?
Sometimes we say it best when we say nothing at all.

White knuckler number 2 here - had a difficult couple of days - mostly feeling down, bored, lackluster etc , had to turn down any t-day dinners because I didn't want to deal with the questions of why I'm not drinking, etc etc.. SO tired of that aspect in the social world.
I'm trying not to isolate too much the other way though. Struggling to find balance but so thankful and elated to be sober.
Another 24 for me please & thank you!
