Carrots, Eggs, and, Coffee

Grandmother says... Carrots, Eggs, or Coffee; "Which are you?"

A young woman went to her grandmother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved a new one arose.

Her grandmother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water. In the first, she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs and the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil without saying a word.

In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her granddaughter, she asked, "Tell me what do you see?"

"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied.

She brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they got soft. She then asked her to take an egg and break it.

After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg.

Finally, she asked her to sip the coffee. The granddaughter smiled, as she tasted its rich aroma. The granddaughter then asked. "What's the point, grandmother?"

Her grandmother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity--boiling water--but each reacted differently.

The carrot went in strong, hard and unrelenting. However after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior. But, after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened.

The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water they had changed the water.

"Which are you?" she asked her granddaughter.

"When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?"

Think of this: Which am I?

Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity, do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?

Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff?

Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and a hardened heart?

Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you.

When the hours are the darkest and trials are their greatest do you elevate to another level?

I use to always be a carrot everyone knew just what to say to get me to do what they wanted.... I slowly became more like the egg and now I feel in more areas of my life I am more like the coffee I just need to brew a little longer.

I, too, was always a carrot, Angie!! And more than anything, I did NOT want to become an egg as a result of the trials and tribulations of my life. In fact, in the beginning of the relationship with my XA, I remember saying to him, "I don't want to become one of those people who turns 'hard' from being hurt by love." And he totally agreed, said he also had a soft heart and got taken advantage of by people and hurt by love over the years. Fast-forward 16 months, and he turns around and gives me the biggest reason of my life to turn hard as a result of being hurt so deeply by him....three months later, and I still can't believe he did the exact thing to me that we spoke about in one of our first conversations, almost like he did it deliberately.... Anyway, I'm trying REALLY hard to NOT become an egg, and working on becoming the coffee.

I probably was more like the egg growing up as a child of an alcoholic. Maybe I can now be the coffee

No cheesecake for you...or you...or YOU! *said in best soup nazi voice*

I am the water...ha, fooled ya didn't I. I no longer wilt like the carrot, I am too soft to be a hard egg...but coffee changes me like nothing else, one is fine, two turn me into a tasmanian devil.

Craziebaby, I love this post, I love this thread and just couldn't resist messin' with you.

AP San Francisco

An unidentified male was found burned to death following
an unexplained explosion in a luxury domicile in the ________
district. Witnesses stated that the individual had been recently
observed wandering about aimlessly muttering something about
"3 pots...1 pot....what does it matter". A local convenience store
clerk verified that a photograph provided by police matched that
of the unidentified man----and that said subject purchased an
unusually large number of Sara Lee brand cheesecakes before
consuming said items in the alley behind the 7-11....whilst
muttering nonsensical terms such as 'crazy baby'.

When asked why the clerk had not called social services---he replied
that this was not out of the norm for this particular regular, whom he believed
to be a local soup kitchen worker....with delusions of world domination.

Emergency services found the scene difficult to secure and investigate
properly----losing their footing on surfaces made treacherous by baby carrots
and eggs, in addition to a coffee stench that would gag a Starbucks regular.

According to the on scene commander---this was becoming an all too
familiar reprise: "What kind of idiot mixes carrots, eggs, and coffee in the same
pot?".......Officials close to the matter say identification will have to await notification
of next of kin......and the clearing of excessive obscuring cheesecake from the
subjects face.

A dead mouse was also found near the scene......seemingly after chewing
it's way out of the subject's pocket. It unfortunately ran afoul
of a mousetrap set courtesy of Southland Corporation (parent of 7-11).
Next of kin of the mouse could not be located for comment.
