I don't know that there is a correlation. My AH LOVES sweets and will eat up anything sweet in the house but in his defense, I have a bigger sweet tooth and I have never touched any controled substances in my life..

The only correlation that I am aware of is with alcohol and sugar.....but hey, I know a lot more people with a sweet tooth than I do alcoholics (and I'm in AA). I think that it's pretty much that we live in a culture with a huge amount of refined sugar...the more you get the more you want.

My ex is a crack addict and I know when he was trying to quit or not using at the time he'd eat a lot of ice cream, candy.......anything sweet. I believe it has something to do with raising the dopamine levels in the brain.........makes them feel better..........comfort food.

I do remember once my AS was at a doctor appointment and they had done a blood sugar test because he was having some symptoms. The doc told him that he was borderline Hypo-glycemic (sp), and that these people should be aware that they can have a higher incidence of alcoholism due to the sugar craving. But he rarely ate sweets, so...of course that was right around the time that he left our home so he never really followed up on it. But when drugs were not available he drank alot, not sure if he still does or not.

My RAD was so into sweets when she was using. 8 months clean and she hardly ever touches sweets now. I don't know why but that was the case.

My ex abf had a never ending sweet tooth. His drug was opiates, pain pills. It was a bottomless pit. When he was in recovery, it was ravenous.
