I want to add for anyone who reads this and struggles with depression, or who has someone having problems with alcohol in their life mixed with depression, it really is a powerful combination and a tough mix.

My ex told me that she hates herself every single day. Yet despite this, she doesn't take any steps to get better. With such a wealth of information out there on the internet, incredible doctors and the freedom to choose who you want to speak with, the medications you want to try...A world of options...She chooses alcohol to try and quiet the misery inside of her. It's heartbreaking, but it is the decision that is made.

I think my experience with alcoholism has been closely tied to depression. I'm not sure if that's a commonality or more of a rarity, and if a lot of you just are dealing with straight alcoholism without depression, or if really most of the time there's depression leading to alcoholism. I sometimes think if things would have been different had she found the willingness and patience to properly treat the depression. The temptation of the temporary escape via the bottle is just too much.

I still hope she finds the path someday, but realizing that I cannot control that path in any way was liberating.
