johnno.....that is a suggestion or recommendation. It is not a law or a "rule".
There are no alanon police who are going to come to your door...!
There are as many different situations as there are snowflakes.
Sure....it is not a good idea to make a major life decision on impulse.....or one that you aren't prepared to carry out,,,,,,or without any planning......
BUT....that doesn't always apply to everyone!
For example....if a woman has been five years in trying to get the courage to leave an abusive situation....I would never tell her that she has to wait 6 more months because that is an alanon rule!!
Some people never leave their alcoholic. No matter what.
I AM NOT ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE. (it is too much misery for me).
johnno....we all get to make choices for what we want in life....and.deal with the consequences of our choices.....
....good or bad.....
You don't have to fall in line with what anyone else does.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You live in your own skin.....they don't!!

I feel it is wise sometimes to remind people that Alanon, and other programs like Celebrate Recovery, consist of regular people like us. They are not counselors, or relationship advisors. While I went to California and had great training with Celebrate Recovery to become leadership, that is not the norm.
Just throwing that out there. Certainly I think the support you get is AMAZING, however, the only one that can make decisions about your relationship is you.
