He's trying to hold onto what little shred of dignity he still has.
This way, it's his idea to go no contact.
In breakups, this is what happens. Everyone wants to believe it was their choice, it's much less painful that way. Let it go. We all have our own truths. You won't be able to change how he deals with it. Let it go.
