Have you tried contacting the Bar Association in your area to see which lawyers offer a 1st free legal consultation? This might go a long way in assuaging your fears about your AH taking your children from you (which I don't believe would happen....it would be too much work for him!).
I used a lawyer referral service and got 2 legal consults over the phone. Then I paid for one to the tune of 50$. She was very nice and I went with her...she just wasn't very proactive. In the end, I had another legal consult with another lawyer for 100$ and this one had ALL the answers to my questions. She ended up finalizing my divorce for me. Because my X didn't bother showing up to court for both the custody or the divorce hearing, my total cost for the divorce was about 2,000$, which isn't bad.
