In Loving Memory Of.....
The mother of my co-worker, she passed away Monday from an OD of pain killers and alcohol. Her memorial service is this afternoon. I don't know her name, only that she leaves behind a husband, son, and daughter.
The poem is called "High Flight." It was written by John Gillespie Magee Jr., who was killed in the Battle of Britain at age 19.
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds -- and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of -- wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

The poem was read by President Reagan at the memorial service for the Challenger astronauts. It's beautiful, almost haunting if we picture ourselves in flight.

The service was wonderful. So many friends and family present, they shared many fond and warm memories about her life.
She was 48, so pretty and full of energy. May she always be thought of as "a kiss from the sun to the day".
