New here wanting to stop

I just wanted to say hi. I’ve been lurking a long time and want to finally put an end to this nonsense of drinking. I’ve pretty much hit bottom, fortunately haven’t lost my job. I did lose my second marriage 6 months ago, which is very painful. So now my daughter and I had to find a place to live, she lives with me, we were a blended family. I chose drink over my wife, my best friend, I’ll never be able to forgive myself for doing that.

Anyway, I’m 44 and want to stop this garbage. Thanks for listening.

Sorry what you are going through. I recently joined here and have found it very helpful and has assisted me in changing my mindset. Don't get me wrong I am still having moments/days that are challenging. However, I am enjoying feeling far better physically and mentally. You deserve to be happy.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I don’t know if this is rock bottom but it’s not far off. I can’t believe the problems that I let it cause in my life. The dumb, nasty, offensive things I’ve done, the hurt I’ve caused others. It’s difficult to think about and live with.

Dustyfox, I don’t know how I’ll handle the cravings. I’ll start with meetings. I’ve gone days, weeks even months without a drop. Once I start it’s game over though. But it got worse in the past year. It needs to stop for good.

Glad you're here. It helps to talk with folks that have battled the disease.
Don't let things from the past effect what your future can be.
A new start, with new memories can happen.
You're here, so that's a start...right?

Aerogrd - I'm so glad you found us & decided to post.
Unfortunately, I waiting much longer to quit - but when I was in my 40's I began to really lose any control I had. Every time it was in my system, unexpected & dangerous things happened. My life was in ruins when I found SR. Not feeling alone anymore made all the difference to me. I found the strength to reclaim my life. You can too!

One of the best places to be—wanting to quit and here.

It’s a life changer, but quitting drinking is the best gift you could give yourself. 11 months for me and it’s been such a blessing.

We are here for you. Stick around and reach out.

Well, I made it one week. It’s a start. Was busy with work and kept myself busy. It feels so much better not waking up with a hangover and feeling like crap.

The way I try to look at this is you can, from now on, take charge of your life, completely, and begin to heal yourself and make yourself a better person. And as you become this better person you naturally become the type of person who begins to inspire others, who starts to be the source of positive changes for others. In the end of your life, despite your shortcomings and regrets, you may find that your overall contribution to the well being of others will be higher than that of the average person.

As my signature says, try not to dwell in the past. There is not just today, or right now, or this moment. There is all of your future left to be filled and you can now, consciously and with intent, begin to fill it with qualities and memories that you can be proud of.
