fed up
not sure what to post here. I am 60 years old and have been drinking since I was 18, love it. But for 3 years now I drink every night and can't seem to slow down. I don't get what you would call smashed and I only drink for about 1 1/2 hours. But I must have a problem because I can't seem to stop. I guess I should mention in that 1 1/2 hours I drink about 1/5 of a liter of whiskey. Anyway I'm fed up feeling controlled by this, not to mention how it makes me feel. So this is my first attempt to reach out and take steps to remedy this.

If you're inclined and serious about quitting, look into a reputable rehab program and go. It's the best way to start if at all possible, IMO. At the very least, go down to the library and check out a copy of the book Alcoholics Anonymous (aka "The Big Book") if you're not familiar with it. Read the first 164 pages slowly and with an open mind. If you see yourself anywhere in those pages, if they feel like they're talking about you, you'll know. And keep coming here to SR. Lots of good info here. I wish you the best!
guess I'm a little slow but no, no plan except try not to drink tonight after work. I was thinking about asking my doctor for I think its called antibuse, makes you violently sick if you drink. Oh, I forgot, I also bought a book this morning "The Recovery Formula"

Curtis - All you have to do is post saying that you're new, and you will be welcomed. When I first found SR, I joined my class and got the best support. Not sure I would have made it without the support from the friends I made in my class.

So now I’ve had time to think about this, I remembered I have had a plan to do this for so long and not been able to do it, that I forgot about it. I only drink after work for about 1-2 hrs tops while playing PS3. So my plan has always been to replace that time with exercising. Also I am very scared of mixing prescription drugs with alcohol. I thought about taking a couple aspirin right before I get off work. This would definitely keep me from drinking.
The problem is about 3:00 I start really looking forward to that drinking play time after work and it always wins out.

You are correct in planning a replacement activity. It almost doesn't matter what it is. For my first few months sober I took walks after work. Moving helped me. Also, stay far away from the places you bought alcohol. Can you plan some treats for youself? For me, keeping track of the $$ I saved was a motivator. You are going to be pleased with yourself...maybe not today, but soon!
I see your posts in there, Curtis. So if you want to easily find that thread again, Go to the gray bar close to the top of the screen. Find "User CP", and pull down the menu. Go to "Subscribed Threads", and it will show you the threads you have previously posted in, including this one and the Class of November thread.
Best way is post when you feel like posting, there's always people around to respond, SR is a fantastic resource for support, feel free to post when you want to.
There are also a number daily support threads, joining a class, or posting on the 24hr threads can give some great support.
For me I needed daily support to make Sobriety happen, if you don't have other support resources or if you're not going to face to face meetings, I'd recommend log in each day and at least read threads . . . keeping myself focused on the task at hand each day was important!!

At the very least I read this site every day, but more often than not I will try to contribute to someone's thread (just like I did this one). I think PurpleKnight explained it very well. Welcome aboard.
