Start of something new

Hi, been looking at these pages for sometime and about to take the plunge. I am now past 60 and have been drinking about 6 to 10 standard drinks per night for about 40 years. Seem to get by but as I am getting older the more this habitual drinking is affecting how I enjoy life and I suspect my health. I am coming up for a hip operation in 4 weeks time and saw this as an opportune time to stop drinking to improve my health for the operation - and lose a few kg's. Its morning here so no dramas now as I never have my first drink till 5pm. If I am back here tomorrow morning I will have gone without for 2 nights and that would equal my record in 40 years. If I fail - and I don't intend to - I'll be too embarrased to resurface. Wish me luck.

You can do this! Have a little faith in yourself. It takes some changes and effort but is so worth it.

Welcome.

Until you have a serious reason to quit, it will be tough.

Suspecting your health is suffering and losing a few kg won't power you through 40 years of brain altering addiction.

When you start to think you are insane or think you just had a stroke, then you may have the internal motivation to stop. But, as we all here know, easier said than done.

Get clean. Booze is poison.

Welcome to SR giveitago!!

Good to hear you are ready to give up on your drinking. I do hope you get checked out by a dr. who knows your drinking history. Withdrawals can be quite serious.

Welcome giveitago.

You never have to feel embarrassed with us, no matter what happens. I'm glad you've decided to change your life. I drank 30 yrs. & I know how strange it seems at first. Losing weight for the operation will be a nice bonus. Let us know how it goes.

Encouraging news, giveitago!

Give it all you've got; it's definitely worth it!

And, good luck with your hip surgery. Let us know how it goes.

You can do this!

Welcome Giveitago. I'll be 67 in a couple of months and am also quitting drinking because I worry it's affecting my health. Though I drank for years socially, I didn't really do any heavy drinking until I retired about 6 years ago. So far, I have never blacked out, nor have I thrown up since my college days. I do find myself drinking more and more, self medicating for sleep and emotions. It's time to stop for me too. Good luck. I wish you the best.

Hi and thanks so much for the welcome and support. Got through last night ok with the help of about 4 cups of hot black tea. Did not sleep well but guess thats to be expected. Only 2 days which is probably like the first 100m of Mt Everest but intend to push on. I'll be back here tomorrow for sure.
Rar, you sound like my twin.
Luv to all
