Alcoholism resembles Stockholm Syndrome

I was just reflecting on how absolutley enamored I used to be with drinking. It consumed my very waking thought. When my next drink would be, how much I would have, how much it would take. Truly, my EVERY thought.

Stockholm Syndrome is where a victim falls in "love" with their captor.

I was held captive by a bottle. It used me, certainly abused me, had its way with me and yet, I "loved" it. The more it hurt me, the more I would return to it for more abuse. Thinking maybe, this time would most assuredly be different.

I'm so grateful to have broken free.

XO AO

Absolutely enamored describes it well for me too...

At times, I think it felt like my reason for living. Tragic.

I never thought of it this way but you're exactly right. This is a great reason not to drink today.

That is a great analogy, AO! Your thought has got me thinking. As always, I much appreciate your insights!

I think we fall in love well before the abuse starts.

No one would keep drinking if they felt from the start what they feel at the end.

Booze allows us to feel a sense of connection, it temporarily makes the world a cool place, gives us confidence to talk to people in ways we only wish we could sober.

Ever wondered why, whilst drunk, we throw our arms around people we've known just that night "your a great person, no really, you rock"

Booze works for us for a long time.

Before it turns on us.
It's like "death by a thousand cuts" after that. Like getting slowly skinned alive. Strong images, but it gets really painful doesn't it??

I think that is where the Stockholm Syndrome type of stuff kicks in.

The only temporary relief from our booze problem is more booze.

Imagine dropping a sober alchy in a war zone...... Instant terror.

Imagine dropping an already lubed up alchy in the same war zone, with a bottle of high powered spirits.
Give that alchy half an hour and he'll have it all figured out, know what needs to happen and figure this situation could be worse. I could have been dropped in with no booze being the only real thing that could actually be worse. But none the less, Booze provides a way of coping with the worst situations. It removes fear.

Booze is our ultimate coping tool.

Great points. I still wanted booze after a medical diagnosis of high enzymes aka inflammation. Holy moly, addiction is sooooooooo weird! Definitely some Stockholm syndrome there.

Yes, a very toxic relationship that was much like the one I had with a narcissist friend who tried to destroy me. I'm also recovering from that nightmare along with alcohol.
