How many times?!
I did too. Until I had the answer as to why I kept doing it. My answer was because I didn't know how to value myself. I obviously didn't. I knew every time what would happen but I kept doing it anyway.
Then it dawned on me I needed help. Help 1. Do whatever I needed to do to get through a day without drinking. Help 2. Get help on those days practicing what I didn't know how to do...reminders I was worth it and I could do it. Even when I didn't believe it. I trusted that others believed it. Until I knew it to be true myself.
And I repeated that over and over till I began to believe it.
Now I know it to be true. Now I stick around so I don't forget.
You can do it. You are not alone.

I don't drink a lot but when I do I can't anticipate if it will be a drunk night or a night of moderation. Sucks.
I know this sounds simple but your desire to be sober has to outweigh your desire to drink. In the beginning this is very tough so you'll need a support system in place and avoid places where there will be alcohol. Unfortunately this will probably mean stop associating with people who are still drinking until you are completely comfortable.
What has helped me in remembering is writing a note to self and reading it when I have the urge to drink. I created a Word document where I described in gory detail how I was feeling. It's pretty eye-opening to go back and read it.
You can do this. Hangovers suck and I think they drive a lot of people to sober up. My biggest realization is that the vast majority of the time, I can't stop myself at one. As others have said, the first drink gets me drunk because that leads to the many more that come later.
Hang in there. I'm rooting for you.

Oh sweet Unchartered. How I know and recall days like this. I'm so sorry you are in such agony.
