Celebrated One Year by Drinking ...
... Diet Coke. 
January 4th was my one year sobriety date, and I can hardly believe it. After so many false starts and countless relapses, I am still sober and still have no desire to drink. It definitely helps to have support and a program.
A little over a year ago, I had separated from my cheating husband, gotten in trouble with Family Services for getting drunk while home alone with my autistic child, and wound up in the ER with a BAC of over .5 . Talk about having SEVERAL moments of clarity. I had finally reached my bottom.
Since then, I've been in intensive outpatient treatment and going to AA. It worked! The support of countless friends, including those here at SR, has been lifesaving. In the past month, I've weathered 2 weeks of Christmas vacation with my son (he needs routine and structure and went a little nuts over the holidays), sold my house, found a new house, interviewed for jobs, got a new job, begun finalizing my divorce, had a bad case of the flu, and am getting ready for a BIG move to a new house and will be starting my new job in two weeks. LOTS going on, and as I reflect on all of it, I can't imagine what it would be like to be trying to do all of this DRUNK. What a junk show that would be. It wasn't easy getting sober, but it was harder to keep drinking the way I was.
I am so grateful for the support of SR and so grateful for the life I have today. I don't post here much, but I do stop by and read posts every day. I appreciate the inspiration and even hearing about the struggles ... my heart goes out to you. I just wanted to encourage those of you who are struggling ... it CAN be done. I was a drunk pretty much all of my adult life, and it reached its peak the last two years. Over a dozen detox visits to the hospital, numerous contacts with the police, countless relapses, and several times when I should have died. But I'm still here. I never thought I would be celebrating a year without alcohol.
Don't give up. Grab onto any lifeline you can find. Try every program. Keep your friends and loved ones close and lean on them for support. A better life is out there. If I can do it, so can you.

What a lovely gift you shared. Thank you so much. I'm a month behind you. You definitely got a lot more accomplished than me but I'm just as grateful and just as happy.

Oh I'm so pleased for you desertsong. I've followed your story all the way through, it's remarkable how you've turned your life around.
