Hi from Sean

Hi, I'm Sean, alcoholic.

Cutting my story short, I work in a very people intensive and rather high profile role and for all the usual reasons want to stop drinking.

I haven't had much success lately and I'm in a low and disgusted state- I'll call by a the forum here and post my progress. August 10th, my last day- let's see what I can do.

Best wishes.

Hi Sean

Welcome to our family.
I am glad you found us!

I have over 535 days without a drink.
Most of my success is from coming here and posting and reading.

If someone had told me about 8 years ago, I would be able to say that I had not had a drink for over a year I would have laughed and not believed them.

But I have done that and a bit more.

There are people here from all over the world. I am from the UK. We all understand what it is like to suffer from addiction.

I wish you the best xxxx

Pleased to meet you Sean - it's wonderful to have you join us.

I had felt all alone when I found SR. Just to be able to talk openly about my addiction was a huge relief for me. No one else in my life understood. Here, I was given the encouragement and support I needed. It made all the difference. Hope you feel the same - congratulations for making this life changing decision.

A big thank you to you folks taking the trouble to say hi- it's appreciated I can assure you.

I feel I'm making my way through today well enough. I've been busy this morning and have activities in mind for the evening to see me through; I can think about tomorrow tomorrow of course.

In the past I've gone up to nine months so I guess I know I can do this, thanks. This thing indeed is all in the mind and once the switch clicks and stays clicked of course you see the much greater advantages to be had.

For the last year I've had what I see as a rather demanding job at a Chinese university made more stressful by insensitive management and other issues, and it's been all too easy to hit the bottle. Alcohol is very cheap here and very strong- if you want you can buy 4.5 litres of a 55-60% national spirit similar to vodka for about $6. There seems to be no tax on it, it's the best deal in the world and about the best drink in the world, very pure and effective...

Right now it's a few weeks vacation and my stress levels are down; I'm also looking forward to meeting some new staff next month as I have no friends I really connect with at present.

I'm British, 44 and the things I particularly want from sobriety are 100% with the teaching I do, losing weight and maximizing productivity of what I see as my good mind- I have plenty of fascinating projects on computer and I've had enough trashing of my days lately.

Best, Sean

I'm happy to hear of your positive attitude, Sean. It's so hard to convince ourselves that drinking truly doesn't lower our stress levels. It took me ages to understand that I was just making everything harder and more unmanageable by 'calming my nerves' with alcohol.

Glad you are here and making progress.

My thanks Heyvn & stacia, I wish I could do something for you in return...

Indeed alcohol is deceptive, it seems to relax you for a while then worsens the situation on all fronts much more.

And quite so, reading about others is most informative and I begin to make sense of the curious psychological thing that an addiction is.

I've had a very good day today at my desk and most optimistic about tomorrow.
