The Film: Flight, Denzel Washington

Has anyone seen the film: Flight with Denzel Washington?

Denzel Washington in Flight | Official Movie Site | Available Now on Blu-ray? & DVD - Also Available On Demand and Digital Download

I watched this yesterday.

I really enjoyed seeing so much of Alcoholics Anonymous woven into the film.

If you haven't seen it yet...check it out!

Have a good day everyone.

Day 28

Hi! Yes I have seen it. Saw it on the big screen before I got sober. Thought it was a good movie. 34 days sober now and brought it home to watch on DVD last night so hubby could see it too. He left the room mid movie. All of the alcohol abuse was too much for him. Too close to home he said and too fresh in our lives. I really didn't mean for it to upset him. I guess I should have seen that coming. Feel bad for bringing it home now...
I haven't been to an AA meeting yet. Scared to go, but if its anything like the movie, maybe it's not so scary?

Siesta,

I haven't seen the movie, myself, but I can tell you meetings aren't scary (even though it feels scary walking in for the first time).

great movie for AA people. My sponsor is a director at a rehab, he had his residents watch it!

It's a great movie for non-AA people as well. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and plan on seeing it again!

LOL, I finally saw it a week ago, loved it, up until the last scene.

Wanna know why? The lead investigator asked Whip his "opinion" about something (don't want to spoil the movie for anyone who hasn't seen it). His crackerjack lawyer should have been objecting all OVER the place to the improper question.

Don't ever take a lawyer to the movies with you to see courtroom dramas. They will ruin it for you.

But the AA stuff, and everything else, was very accurate. Liked the movie, as a whole, very much.

rented it from a Redbox last night....great movie. I was a little miffed when they started showing AA mtgs, but then by the end thought that they did a pretty nice job with them.

I saw it last night, great movie, the message really spoke to me. Wonderful performance by Denzel too, overall just hit home, great movie for anyone who has "come clean" under tough circumstances.

PS - Lexie, I believe at the end it was NOT a trial, just a hearing. Not sure if that makes a difference!

I'm probably in the minority, but I am not sure if I will end up watching this movie soon. But I am glad to hear that it's got lots of thumbs up from those in the alcoholic and recovery circles!

I have not seen it yet. Did anyone notice if there were any parallels to Lyle P's story found in the back of the Big Book "Grounded"?

The only parallels I noticed were that they were both pilots and alcoholics!!

It was a great movie, although my husband was quick to point out the unlikely hood of landing the plane they way Denzel did!!

I had a chance to hear Lyle P. give a talk at a conference. The thing that impressed me most about it was that he made no attempt to fight, delay or bargain his way out of any of the charges. He more or less treated it like a 9th step amends and let everyone belittle him without any defense.

Did the movie portray anything like that degree of humility?

Funny, but I was think about this earlier. I saw the film months ago and if I remember correctly, there were no depictions of Denzel's character going through withdrawals. His character was portrayed as a heavy daily drinker and abuser.

However, overall I found the film very powerful (even if the crash landing was a little far-fetched).

Did the movie show anything like that?
Denzel's character was in denial until the end of the film. His character engaged in all manner of subterfuge in order to take blame away from himself. He was helped by his lawyer and a Pilot's Union rep.

However, at the end of the film . . . (you will have to watch to find out ).

Spoiler Alert!!!

The movie was about the FAA crash investigation, not the criminal charges. He was attempting to evade responsibility, and could have gotten away with it. But then he admitted to drinking the bottles of vodka found empty on the plane. He was hungover and intoxicated during the FAA hearing, not in recovery. But, like so many of us, he couldn't do it anymore, done lying and playing the game.

That was it, they didn't show the criminal charges. He found AA in prison.

Actually there was a pilot who became famous for making a mistake that saved his life. He did the exact opposite of what he was taught in flight school and was the first survivor of a tailspin. He went on to teach it to hundreds of other pilots and there is even an airbase near me named after him:

I wasn't that impressed to be honest, I love Denzel Washington in most films but this one i found a little dull. I was going to comment on the film there but would have been a huge spoiler for anyone who hasn't seen it!
