Really struggling to stay away from the bar.
Really struggling to stay away from the bar.
I want to drink sooo bad! I work near roughly 40 bars in a mile radius. My ride gets off an hour later than I do today. The temptation is DEFINITELY eating away at me today. UGH!

No YOU don't want to drink - your AV wants to drink and is trying its best to convince you. Remember - it CAN'T make you do anything.
I think you want to remain sober - that is why you are SMART and came to SR!
Do you have something else you can do for the hour? Is there a bookstore or coffee shop nearby? Maybe grab a co-worker and run for coffee.... Can you stay at work a little longer and just read and post on SR? Go to chat on SR? Do you have someone you can call to catch up with?
Hang tight and think about how you want to feel about yourself in 1 hour as you drive home.... How do you want to feel when you go to bed tonight.... In the morning.....

I bet there's at least a half dozen coffee shops in that same mile radius Why not take the opportunity to treat yourself to a nice mocha or chai or whatever else (besides alcohol) strikes your fancy while you wait for your ride?
Hi Im Sharon and Im an Alcoholic.
How bad do you want to stay sober today?
Not tomorrow but just for today?
Remember you dont have to go thru early
recovery alone. Having a connection to
support with you can lead you away from
that next drink that would lead you right back
where you once were not too long ago.
Having someone to call that will be stronger
in will power to help you or distract you this
afternoon and tonight will grant you one more
day sober.
That's all u need to do to not drink today.
Tomorrow isnt here yet, so no need to
worry....yesterday is gone and if u stayed
sober yesterday, then repeat the same thing
this afternoon or tonight with help from
AA's support.
Tomorrow we will be here to do the same thing
today, just by carrying you till the urge to drink
has lessened.

Im just going to stay here at work, i dont even walk by the bar right now (Im not going to lie, I have to pass about 6 of them just to get to the coffee shop and I will detour) There is a huge annual motercycle rally this weekend here, so even MORE beer venders not even 50 feet away! Its just frustrating. I mean I can literally taste it in my mouth, and thats bad. Its been 8 days when will this feeling finally subside??? Its driving me insane. Thanks for listening.

Can you go on-line for an AA meeting? I don't know about them, but I've heard people talk about them here at SR..... May be helpful..... Hang tight - a fair amount of time has already passed
p.s. think about the disgusting taste of the beer the next day when it is coupled with the shame, embarrassment, upset stomach and hangover.... YUCK!

The AV can be very tricky. However, you are much stronger than it is! Your hour of waiting must be about up ?!? Each time you choose to stay sober - you get even stronger.
This is a big battle that you won! Well done! You should feel proud!
Hang on and have a wonderful, sober evening.

Hang in there. It gets easier. I promise. The cravings will pass. Some are stronger than others. Just tell yourself "I am going to stay sober for this hour". Then it will become days. You can do this.
I just got back from Walmart. They have a liquor store and that's where I used to buy my vodka from. Even after almost 4 months my mind still likes to screw with me. I have to think of all of the horrible things alcohol did to my life. I have to remind myself that if I drink again, it's a very good possibility it will kill me. I feel really good and proud of myself. It's just not worth it anymore.
Hi Dom
I'm glad you're sticking with it.
I remember the relief (and strength) I always felt when I woke up, sober, after a night of craving...you can do it
This technique is helpful for some too. It helped me in the early days

It's always comforting to know even for
myself at 21 yrs sober that if I ever need
help, dont understand something, need
extra encouragement that I never have
to figure it out or go thru anything by
myself or on my own.
Today I protect my recovery anyway
I can because it is a gift of life without
poison trying to destroy it.
I began in rehab after I tried to end
what I thought was a miserable life.
Boy was I wrong as I was told after
being evaluated that I had an alcohol
problem and not mental.
They handed me the tools and knowledge
of a recovery program to live by and
incorperate in my everyday affairs.
In doing so, and sharing what it was
like before during and after drinking
with others that still suffer with addiction,
it soon became my purpose in life.
All I did to stay sober was take it one
day at a time and not a day more. Then
those sober days began to add up to
where I am today.
Recovery and sobriety is a journey to
living an honest happy life alcohol free.
