Have a sponsor. Now what?
Went to my meeting today and asked the speaker how to go about getting a sponsor. She said she would be happy to be mine if I wanted her to. I was thrilled. I am excited to start working the steps and I am really loving going to meetings. I don't know what to expect now. What do sponsors actually do. How often to we meet? This is all very new to me.Thank you for your input.
Good for you!!
They are all different, but I meet with mine once a week to work the steps/talk/ask questions, etc. and I call her everyday.
She gives me writing assignments (I am on 3) and we also go over those.
It took some getting used to, but I basically bounce stuff off of her and get her opinion to see if I am being a wacko (often I am) and she doesn't give advice really, but we apply the principles of the program to my life.

Great move IP!
You should check out the AA Pamphlet: Questions and Answers on Sponsorship
When someone asks if I would sponsor them my response is usually "Sure, let's set up a meeting and talk about what we each expect to see if we're a good fit."
On my first meeting I ask what their expectations are of me and I express my expectations then if we both think it will work out well we go from there.
I like to meet once a week. That's how my sponsor did it and it worked for me.
We start at step one and go from there.
Good luck on your new journey!!

Hi Im Sharon and Im an Alcoholic.
When looking for my sponsor in
early recovery, I was scared and
AA was all new to me way back
in 1990. I thought I had to have
a strict, stern sponsor. Someone
who would give me home work
every night and have written tests.
Yuk.
However, the lady that would become
my sponsor was someone I learned
from was from her examples. From
how she lived and incorperated the
steps in her everyday life. From the
service work she did.
Seemed like the softer kinder way of
sponsoring was actually what was
needed for me.
You will find out that everyone follows
the same steps, but works them in their
own way. In their own situations.
Im not a Big Book Thumper as some
are called. I have read the Big Book
and Step Book and Ive been to many
meetings where both are discussed.
I walk the walk of recovery and not
just speak it. Actions speak louder than
words as I have found out.
All sponsors are different and you may
try a few of them before you feel really
comfortable with them.
My sponsor never TOLD me what to do
to stay sober, but thru her SUGGESTIONS
I was able to take it a day at a time feeling
comfortable.
Today some 20 yrs sober, I continue to
live and incorperated the steps in my everyday
affairs passing on my own experiences,
strengths and hopes of what it was like before,
during and after alcohol.
Some 20 yrs. later of many one days at a time
collected together I can truely say that I am
HAPPY JOYOUS AND FREE from living the insanity
of addiction. Living an honest life with faith in
a Power greater than I guiding me and protecting
me I have been granted another awesome sober
day.
So can you.
Enjoy your Journey as you travel the road to
a happy destiny.

Yes, I give suggestions based on my experience. If I don't have experience on the particular issue I may refer them to someone who does have experience.
Congrats for getting a sponsor. Im uncertain about the whole process as well as i just got my first sponsor. So far I just call to check in each day and we will be meeting once a week to start working the steps.

Day 17 for us Fallow. Yay! We are doing the right things now. AA is really what I needed to stay sober. Great job!

One thing I have learned here is that there is a lot of different ideas about what a sponsor should do.
So talk to yours and ask what she thinks. Some sponsors will want to get to know you personally, others will limit themselves to steps. There are many other things.
Long ago I never bothered asking how things were supposed to go with my sponsors. That was a mistake. They and I made assumptions--and we should have talked instead!
