Kicking the codeine

Hi everyone i'm new to the forum and also addicted to codeine. I've been on it for nearly two years now and at this stage i just wanna quit, however, its not that simple.

I had an accident when i was around 6 or 7 (i'm 24 now) that resulted in one of my testicles being knocked up into my stomach, had an operation while in hospital which sorted things out. But approx. 4 years ago i started getting pain in my penis, i ignored it at first thinking it might go away but it didn't, so i tried various OTC pain relievers but none worked until i tried codeine at dosages of around 75mg. It got rid of the pain and also made me feel nice and cosy, so i started taking it everyday once in the morning and once in the evening to keep the pain at bay. Over the following months the dosages went up and i could feel withdrawals starting if i didn't take any. After a while i wasnt getting the pain anymore which was great but i was also addicted.

I managed to get clean for a week and a half earlier in January but went back on the codeine as the pain came back. I've been to the doctor numerous times but she doesnt do anything anymore as i've been to the hospital and had scans and that done and noone can find whats causing it. I'm gonna see the doc next week and hopefully get something sorted.

Anyway sorry for the long post guys/gals. Peace.

Hey Masta

Welcome to SR! First things first....You need to find out what is wrong with yourself. If your doctor doesnt know what is going on, then you need to go to another one, and if that one doesnt know...another one. You really need to find out what is going on. 3 years ago I had pain in my lower abdomen that had been going on for 6 years. I had numerous scans, blood work, everything. My doctor kept telling me it was in my head. I finally changed doctors and she ran some different bloodwork and did some new tests and it turned out I had cancer. My new doctor told me that I would have been dead in a year if I hadnt gotten the hysterectomy. I had Uteran Cancer. If something in your body is hurting, it is your bodies way of saying something is wrong. Whatever you do, find out what is going on. I dont mean to scare you, but I hate it when I hear that a doctor is saying they cant figure out what is wrong. You have to take charge of your own healthcare because if you dont...no one else will.
Secondly, there are many different meds that are narcotic free that can help you with the pain. Because of my cancer treatment my spine and discs have completely deteriated. I have 6 herniated discs and my lumbar spine is crushing down on itself. I dont think it is a good idea to start taking a different drug just to get off another one, but pain is pain. I do take Lyrica for my back and that has worked great. There are all kinds of non-narcotic pain killers out there. But I really think you need to find out what is going on first and foremost.
Everyone here is great and will be very helpful. Good luck to you and congrats on your first step to being clean..admitting you have a problem. BTW, I dont know if you have checked it out yet, but there is another blog on here for people fighting addiction who have chronic pain. Everyone is so helpful

HUGS

So I read that you are still taking the codeine. If you want to stop that now, you can with support. I can't sort out whether you plan to stay with the codeine until you get the pain resolved.

I've been to two different urologists and had two cystoscopys done, but they cant seem to find anything.

to FrmrlyStgbr i'd rather not have to stay on the codeine until i got the prob resolved but i dont know how long it'd be before its sorted out.

when i go see the Dr. during week should i tell her about the codeine situation? or would this be a bad idea?

thanks for the responses.

It may or may not be a bad idea depending on how knowledgeable your doctor is about addiction. Assert that you took it for pain, not for recreation (which you did) and don't let them treat you worse because of it, because a lot of them will.

I took codeine by the handfuls for a long time as well as a slew of other stuff that caused problems with me having to pi$$ all the time.

I went thru a lot of painful tests like having a camera up my pee hole into my bladder.

All the time, it was my drug use that was causing my problems.
I am codeine free (and completely clean)for over 5 weeks now.

That crap probably doesnt even help you anymore, do to tolerance, right?

I have injured my liver because of taking high amounts of codeine, actually the codeine didnt hurt my liver, but the tylenol attached did.

It's painful now. Be careful with that stuff.

I had a camera shoved up there twice

Before i quit for the week and a half it wasn't really helping, i was just taking it to prevent withdrawals. My tolerance went down a bit and now it seems to help with the pain more than before.

congrats with getting clean btw

Vintersemestre: I don't think i'll say anything to the doc as i doubt she would be very knowledgeable about addiction.

Yeah, you'd be better off finding a doctor that specializes in addictions if you want to talk to one about it.
