I find light exercise improves my mood. Just getting outside for a walk helps. Also, I have been listening to a podcast called Happier with Gretchen Ruben. She offers a lot of good tips.

In the past, I have reached out to my Doctor and taken antidepressants, which helped a lot when I just couldn't shake the funk.

I have avoided meds and antidepressants because I too just couldn't shake off the "cobwebs in the brain" feeling they gave me, but I highly encourage you to seek a professional opinion and follow advice, we're all so unique and some of us require different solutions than others.

Nowadays I rely on sunlight, fresh air, exercise, and as healthy a diet as possible to aid in my mental health but it's taken me almost 16 years in recovery to reach this point. We're a work in progress, right? Small steps to get there.

Yeah, I'm with Astro.

"Taking something," to change how I felt was the underlying Big Problem.

I tried all kinds of prescribed meds over the years and I've come to the personal conclusion that I know myself best and that meds have too many side effects for me. I stopped taking all of them and I stopped drinking and I don't take any recreational or prescription drugs for "mental health."

After I quit drinking I had an extended period of time that was difficult and uncomfortable but I had decided to stay the course without medication - and it did settle down for me. It took a lot longer than I wanted it to - but it settled down with good self-care.

Eat well
Move daily
Sleep 7-9 hours

^that's what works for me. Everything is (now) working as designed.

It's definitely all about a healthy diet, and exercise is the best possible "quick fix" if you need to jump start yourself to feeling better.
There are natural supplements that can help including saffron, 5-HTP, and St. John's Wort. (always check with your doctor first)
I like to read a book, it takes my mind out of itself and focuses on something different...pulls the focus away from the depression.
