Dave, there are medications to help with withdrawal, but they are available only by prescription. You'd most likely be prescribed Ativan or some other benzodiazepine, and given a taper schedule. Given the danger of seizures from alcohol withdrawal, Ativan will help prevent that and also alleviate the anxiety, sweating and other symptoms that accompany alcohol withdrawal. Clonidine also helps the dangerously high blood pressure that can accompany withdrawal.

Bottom line is, though, you need to see a doctor to get these meds, and if your withdrawals are bad enough, you might need to check in for an inpatient detox.
