Desiderata

Found in Old Saint Paul's Church, Baltimore, dated 1692

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly: and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals: and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of aridity and desenchantment it is perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams , it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy.

Isn't this just beautiful!

love Brigid

Indeed it is. A few years ago, my mom found a thousand piece puzzle of the Desiderata. She put it together and framed it, gave it to me for Christmas. It now hangs in my living room and is one of my most prized possessions.

I think people can get quite a bit out of it if they take the time to read it. Thank you for posting it.

I too have a copy of the Desiderta. It is on old looking parchment, with the edges burnt and is mounted on lovely cork board.

It has a prominent place in my home. I found it at a yard sale believe it or not and spent a whole .50 for it. Prior to that, a long time ago, my sponsor for one of my early sobriety anniversarys had given me a book with illustrations.

I read the Deiderata every morning as I pass it coming from my bedroom to the kitchen to get that first cup of java. It has been a WONDERFUL way to start each day for a long time now.

Love and (((((to all))))),

What an incredible find!! Mom had a hard enough time just finding a puzzle.

I know Daisy. I ws thrilled for weeks and it really is a beautiful piece of 'artwork' the way it is done and looks great on my wall. I knew that day that my HP was looking out for me, because as I recall I went 'yard saling' because I was in a 'deep funk' that morning about something.

Everyone please have a great evening!!!!

I found the Desiderata on tiny little gift card in a store when I was looking for a present for my daughters birthday. I meant to put it in with her birthday card but forgot. I found it in my draw a few weeks ago and have had it on the fridge at home ever since. It would be lovely in a frame on the wall, old parchment style. What a great find at the yard sale!! And a jigsaw puzzle ... I wonder if the anonymous writer ever thought that it would be circulated and quite well known?
