Piano Man

It's nine o'clock on a Saturday
The Regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sitting next to me
Makin' love to his tonic and gin

He says, "Son, can you play me a memory
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes"

La la la, de de da
La la, de de da da dum

Chorus:
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright

Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke or to light up your smoke
But there's someplace that he'd rather be
He says, "bill, I believe this is killing me."
As the smile ran away from his face
"Well I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place"

Oh, la la la, de de da
La la, de de da da dum

Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And he's talkin' with Davy, who's still in the navy
And probably will be for life

And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it's better than drinkin' alone

Chorus
sing us a song you're the piano man
sing us a song tonight well we're all in the mood
for a melody and you got us feeling alright

It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause he knows that it's me they've been comin' to see
To forget about life for a while
And the piano, sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say, "Man, what are you doin' here."

Oh, la la la, de de da
La la, de de da da dum

Chorus:
sing us a song you're the piano man sing us a song tonight
well we're all in the mood for a melody and you got us
feeling alright

My favorite line...
And the microphone smells like a beer.

That really happens.
Especially when you're the last act of the night

I always notice that line in particular...

LMAO...Very true nocellphone...I would say that line goes along with most TV and internet programs.

I remember a band I used to work with. When we set up stage somewhere new, they guys would all sniff the mics to make sure they got their own. One of the guitarists was a notorious druggie/drunk, and was always doing that 'throw up just a little, in my mouth' thing, then swallow it. His sweat smelled like battery acid. No one wanted to sing into Chris' microphone. It smelt like much more than a beer. But Billy put if very poetically. Not bad for a guy who liked 'Captain Jack' (Heroin), and has spent his last few years crashing cars into the neighbors' mansions!

Yeah--I keep wondering if good ole Billy will show up here someday. Of course, we probably would have no idea who he was. I love Billy Joel. Have listened to him since I was a little kid. We used to have the 8-track of "Glass Houses" and would listen to it on family road trips. Of course, we also listened to John Denver and Barry Manilow. Oh well.....I survived.

Billy Joel completed another stint in treatment earlier this summer.
His best songs have yet to be written, is my hope.

How many times is that for Billy? As I understand it, 3 is the norm. It takes some of us 3 times to get it right. I for one am afraid to death of rehab. That's a funny phrase isn't it? Like I am not killing myself right now? Sheesh.

I know that feeling, mb.
I don't know if there is a norm for rehab visits.
I went once, for a month. Some guys I know need the fingers of both hands to count their rehab stints. There's also a few guys I know who go back after years of solid sobriety.
One of 'em told me I just don't feel right Dan, and I need to be there for a few weeks.
Care to share what scares you about rehab mb? I'm sure it could be a good dialogue for many.
