Yes, similar.
Very basically I drank for two reasons.
One, the alcohol dependancy is a self fulfilling cycle. The more I did it, the more I wanted it.
Two, where normal people stop and say, enough is enough, I wanted to feel better. That's why after getting out of the cycle of addictive drinking I would still be vulnerable, 6 months, 16 years down the line - if I hold the belief that I may receive satisfaction to overwhelmingly uncomfortable feelings.
There are differences between gambling and drinking. I can lose myself in computer games, forums, meetings, anything other than stop and sit with myself. I don't judge this. In the absense of mental relief it is a natural inclination.
I don't personally have the faith in the 12 steps for this sort of thing and I have addressed it with cognitive behaviour methods.
