Alcoholism and Family.

"Alcoholism is also known as a family disease. Alcoholics may have young, teenage, or grown-up children; they have wives or husbands; they have brothers or sisters; they have parents or other relatives. An alcoholic can totally disrupt family life and cause harmful effects that can last a lifetime. According to U. S. Department of Health and Human Services and SAMHSA’s (Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration) National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information, seventy six million American adults have been exposed to alcoholism in the family. Alcoholism is responsible for more family problems than any other single cause. According to Silverstein (1990), one of every four families has problems with alcohol."

From the article Alcoholism and Its Effect on the Family .

thanks, Dan!

When I start to think, "maybe just one", I'll remember this....my reasons for stopping has everything to do with my family.

Hi fellow canuck!
Our families do so much enjoy the benefits of us being sober.
But I've learned that one of the secrets of maintaining sobriety and a healthy lifestyle is to affirm to myself daily that I deserve those benefits just as much. And also, that whatever we did in the past that hurt our families is just that... In the past.
By focusing on today, and being the best person we can be in the present, and believing above all that we deserve to live free from active alcoholism, we become the best mother/father/sister/brother we can be.

what I've figured out

Dan - Don't know where in Canada you are, but we are warming up to -30 today!!!!!

You know what I have learned in the past 9 days of sobriety? My reasons for quitting had a lot to do with guilt over my kids and my husband....BUT I have found in these last 9 days that I'm stronger than I ever thought and my self-esteem is better than it has been in years. Not to mention better moments with the kids and my husband. I truly think the last 9 days have been the clearest I have had in 10 years!!!

Thanks again for your post.

Dan

That is a very interesting article.

However, we could have drawn the same conclusions as in those studies by reading the stories posted every day on the Family and Friends/ACOA boards of SR.

It is a truly sad situation.

True enough minnie.
I just thought that maybe some people who read the alcoholism forums don't venture down to the Anon boards.
The more awareness and education possible the better.
