Do I need detox?

I've been drinking a fifth of vodka a day for the past couple of months. I'm planning on going to outpatient recovery but you need 3 days of sobriety before you can do it. I was told I should go to detox but I don't feel like I drink enough to need it and not sure if they would take me.

We can't give you medical advice per forum rules.

When in question, go to the dr/ER. I went cold turkey from a similar amount and it was a huge risk. I'd do it again but I didn't realize at the time what a risk I was taking. However you do it, please quit.

I think the best thing is for you to talk to a doctor. You are drinking very large volumes over a long time so I defiantly wouldn't stop drinking suddenly as you don't know how your body will react.

I've heard of people drinking less than you over a shorter time period having seizures, everyone is different. Detox will be hard for the while you have to go through it, I had to be detoxed properly twice before my respective treatments. Good luck.

but I don't feel like I drink enough . . . to go to detox

I think it would be very wise to get medical assistance.

Seeing a doctor first is a good idea to be safe.

Any kind of addiction recovery program, and there
are quite a few available to all, will help you, teach
you about addiction and its affects of your mind and
body.

I began recovery for my alcohol addiction 29 yrs
ago in a 28 day rehab stay with a 6 week aftercare
program and have used and continue to use all the
knowledge and tools taught to me in helping me
remain sober and successful in my own recovery life.

I had to remain teachable, in which I continue doing
today, willing to do what is necessary to remain sober
while facing what ever life throws my way.

We all went to school through out our youth being
taught many lessons to apply in our adult life. Going
to rehab or outpatient programs is just like going to
school where those capable and knowledgeable about
addiction and recovery can teach us how to live life
without addiction to toxic chemicals that flood our
markets, keeping us sick in our addictions.

If anything, go learn and use this important knowledge
in all areas of your life so you can be successful like so
many of us are today.

Were you drinking daily?

I'd get to detox as alcohol withdrawal can be lethal, even if you didn't think you drank that much, it's the habits we do to our body that can create the withdrawals or make them worse without medical help.

First off welcome

A fifth a day?
That puts you closer to the heavyweights than the flyweights, Seaglass, even if it has been only a couple of months.

another vote for a doctor.

I remember that period before outpatient, i had to do five days.

My blood pressure was sky high on the first day so they sent me to urgent care, then I was able to attend the next day.

Fwiw I only made it seven weeks then drank, and now I have 2.5 years. You just never know when it will stick.

It probably wasn’t the safest thing considering my blood pressure, I didn’t even know it was that high, couldn’t feel it. Have you tried taking days off drinking?

I went to detox, and it made the first few days easy (I was so concerned with the discomforts of the accommodations that I forgot about alcohol withdrawal...)
