It’s time to try Sober Recovery
Long time lurker, first time poster. 54 years old. I’ve drank probably a 1.75 ML of whiskey a week for 15 years. But it’s time to stop. No DUI’s, no family problems, I don’t drink until after 5;00, but when I do, I drink until bed - which is probably pretty much every single day.
Sick of eating junk food when I’m drinking, sick of not reading at night because I’m drinking, sick of being hung over each morning, sick of my face looking red and being asked if I went on vacation.
I’ve tried moderation - it doesn’t work for me - one drink becomes 5 or 6 too easily.
It’s just time to quit. So today, I won’t drink, and we’ll worry about tomorrow then. It’s 12:15 pm here - I’ll check in later after 5:00.
Thanks for listening.

This is one decision you will not regret. I remember that feeling too well. Being at work and wondering who is noticing the red face, the whiff of alcohol from the previous night. The obvious look of the heavy drinker. With abstinence it’s all gone now. Looking good feeling good. It’s there if you want it.

Welcome, Sobertoday! This is a friendly, encouraging place where we all understand how you're feeling, regardless of what stage your drinking is in.
I wish I had stopped when I felt as you do now - but I kept going with it, insisting I could use willpower to have just a few. Ended up completely dependent on it and unable to stop once that first drink was in my system. It was chaos. I'm so glad this won't happen to you.

Welcome to the posting side of things.
My uncle was a five 0'clock drinker. Wouldn't touch a drop until happy hour. Then watch out, elbows flying shot glass being filled and refilled, you get the drift.
He thought he couldn't be an alcoholic because he didn't drink until five.
It brought him to his knees more than once. It was sad to watch, as we were very close. He never did manage to quit before his death. Which wasn't directly alcohol related.
Me? Sun up was an excuse for me, so I can't relate to holding off till five but it does sound like it's causing you problems in trying to control it and your health.
Moderation never worked for me, either. I drank to get drunk.
We're all here for you, and I'm rooting for you that when five rolls around you won't pick up a drink.
You can do it. And just remember, you never have to drink again.

Hi Sobertoday! I was a five p.m. drinker, too. Almost never drank before five. I use to think I was really not that bad. I've been taking a closer look at it since I stopped, and I realize I was doing serious damage to myself.
Take it easy on yourself. Treat yourself like you would a small child you're caring for. Good food, good rest, vitamins, talking to people when you're having a hard time, coming here to SR a lot and lots of non-alcoholic fluids. I'll be thinking of you and sending positive vibes.

Hello Sobertoday54,
Welcome to day 1 !!! It is an incredibly brave step, to admit that drinking is a problem in our life is terrifying and a huge relief and a whole bunch of other emotions rolled into one big lump. Good new is, that lump gets smaller every sober day and a new wonderful feeling of freedom takes its place!
I am glad you are here. Cathy
PS, Maybe you might like the "occasionally we like to count our sober days" thread, lots of encouragement!
