Patting myself on the back for a sober weekend
Patting myself on the back for a sober weekend
Howdy friends. Just checking in and saying hello. Spent the weekend hunting in upstate New York hunting with my brother-in-law, Jordan, who kindly brought along a couple of six packs, primarily for me. He drank two over the course of two nights, and I drank none. Wasn't sure I was going to make it through this weekend sober, but it turned out to be pretty instructive. It always amazes me to watch someone nurse a beer for an hour and then stop at one. I recall a fair amount of drinking during similar trips we've taken together, but it seems that was mostly me.
Anway, glad to be back down south where it's warm and people don't use funny accents. Hope everyone's doing well.
Best,
Joe

I didn't see any football this weekend, but I'm assuming the Steelers either lost or cheated.
No meat for my freezer, but I'll have other chances this year. Jordan took a doe, so I'm hoping he'll bring me some sausage when he comes down to Texas for Christmas.
Best,
Joe

Yo Dan - Everything good in your neck of the woods? I've noticed it's wicked cold up north.

The woods are soon to be covered with the blessed white stuff.
Nothing serious yet, but frost every night now.
Ask me again how much I love the North in February, when the celcius and fahrenheit scale meet at 40 below.

My SO however is one of the biggest Eagles Fan's you will ever meet! He gets so mad when I call Andy Reid "The Walrus" but does he not resemble one? LOL
Joe,
I guess you should have been hunting in my yard. It seems the deer just want to taunt me. They grin at me through the kitchen window while I pour my morning coffee. They moon us in the evening while we eat dinner. They leave us piles to step into so that I can practice some of my old Navy words. Aw, but their attitudes make the stew so much better.
Mostly, I really just wanted to stop by and say congratulations on your weekend. I sure know how hard it is to be in those old familiar situations. I don't always do as well.
Regards,
Toivo
P.S. to Dangerous Dan --
I spent my first 22 years of life in the frozen north, hours north of the Packers and the Vikings. My family believed that we all needed to keep lots of alcohol in our bloodstreams so that we didn't freeze solid. Maybe we would have. Most of them never take any chances. I'm glad I escaped. Warm snows are so much nicer.
Uffda!

Thanks Toivo. I was just reading your "Just stopped in..." thread a few minutes ago. Sounds like you live on a little piece of heaven.
Gotta admit, secretly I was kind of glad the deer didn't give me a shot this weekend. I was feeling pretty soft-hearted the whole time I was up there.

Karma...
I was reading the Just stopped in thread too Toivo.
I could smell the place almost... Woodsmoke and fallen leaves...
I've removed the anti-freeze from my bloodstream, and am so grateful for goosedown now
And Joe, Bambi sends hugs of gratitude.

Shoot Dan. You're on my list of folks to receive some venison sausage if I ever do "harvest" a deer.
Your avatar reminds me of one of the highlights of my trip, by the way. About half an hour past dawn on Sunday morning as I was sitting 20 feet up in a tree. About that time a coyote trotted past, coming within about 15 yards of my stand. It never knew I was there. The day before, I had a chickadee come hopping in, first landing on the tree I was in, then on my pack, and finally perching on the top of the bow I was holding for about a second before it noticed me and flew away. That's the kind of thing that really gets me out there. You don't really see that when you're just out for a hike.
Best,
Joe
