Your SAD Thread
Hi fellow sobers. I see many of you are already dismayed at the Fall/Winter season. So I have started a thread for you all in support of avoiding this known trigger for drinking/drug use. First off, good on you all for identifying that trigger. Now let's get down to the business of staying sober despite it.
I know from my own experience with a sort of reversed SAD (I am in very bad shape in the warm/sunny months) it would be easy to relapse. But I am basically this girl:
So one of the things I was doing, that I mentioned on another thread, was to put things that reminded me of better days in my environment. For me this was pictures of cold and snowy days and I would also put on youtube videos of rain.
I mean whatever it takes right?
For me just seeing a picture would at least help a bit to ease my seasonal anxieties, sadness and fatigue. So I'd like to post a pic from time to time to remind you all that you just gotta stay true and sober and there will be sunnier days ahead.
'K guys?

Hi Cajun. A lot of times when I get depressed I forget the things I once enjoyed. Music is a really big one... I always used to start my day with it but haven't for a very long time... I think it helps. How about you?
My mood isn't as much seasonal, actually. Cold weather/dark/rain, etc. seems to counterbalance my depressive tendencies at times. This is to say my mental state is not dependent on the weather but obviously influenced by it in different ways. I'm depressed year-round but 'nice' weather doesn't mean nicer mood. There is spring depression too for instance. Winter is fine with me and I like snow.
yeah, strangely I somehow feel more depressed during summer. The cold and dark seems to suit my general mood better. They go hand in hand well.
We are about finish spring and head into summer, I feel much worse than I did in the winter. But I think the winter wore me down and now the summer is here and I'm supposed to be out enjoying it but im all messed up from winter so I cant so I feel bad and not NORMAL.
There is a theory floating somewhere about the rate of change of light and its correlation with the fluctuations of bi polar disorder.

Sleepie, thanks for this thread. I have chronic major depressive disorder, and it is worse in the winter. I use a SAD light, which helps a little.
I am glad you may be experiencing some relief from your own seasonal symptoms as this season unfolds.

Thanks for thinking of us sun-lovers, sleepie.
Only three more months. I can do this. I have many pictures and videos on my phone that I look at when I get overwhelmed in these short dark days. I never knew people had problems with the sun until I came to this site. I couldn't understand it - but now I know that it is difficult for some of you. Thanks for putting that out there, too.
I tend toward the manic most times, but I've found that exercise helps me the most - I make a real effort to get out even though the gray days and the rain bring me down. That's the biggest thing I do to tamp down the anxiety and speedy brain.

Well, it makes sense though. I mean it (the sun) would increase anxiety in people who are anxious already.
There are a few people I know in real life here in the rain forest of the Pacific NW who also can't wait for the winter every year. I never discussed it with them, I figured they had their reasons.
They do have webbed feet, though.

Oh there you are.
Well now Velma was missing you. She did put on her favorite sweater. She was going to put in her contact lenses but I advised her that an erudite air had more intrigue... oh she has several years sobriety too, ya never knew did you?
