A year sober👍
Hi all.
One year sober!
Feel really healthy, lost loads of weight, doing well at work, got more money than ever, much better relationship with the kids....
Loads of good stuff and might be dead by now f I hadn't stopped the booze.
But.....
Still know with certain people i.e. My brother and his Mrs. , my brother in law, my father in law, lots of 'ex' mates ( all drinkers suprise suprise) I am known firstly as an alcoholic.
I know my relationship with all these people is and always will be superficial. They all feel that what has 'happened to him won't happen to them'.
Feels very lonely here sometimes.
But it's still worth it.
Thanks.

Congratulations, Gravy Train. You've passed a huge milestone. Keep at it and the hard stuff gets easier (while the hard stuff just stays hard!).
I hope that you find peace with your drinking past. It sounds like you are on your way. Most of the people that I lost from quitting drinking weren't really that big of a loss. Some of them came back. Some of them gained a lot of respect for me, which makes me uncomfortable but I'll take it.
It's been five years since I quit and now I accept the label "alcoholic" with pride. It's a badge of honor. I'm comfortable in my own skin. I'm growing up a little bit. It's good.
Congratulations again. Keep up the good work.

Congratulations on a year GravyTrain, that's pretty amazing. And remember that while you may be an alcoholic...you are a sober one and you've done a lot of work to get where you are. We all recognize and appreciate how big of an accomplishment that really is.

Maybe some of them are uncomfortable with you not drinking because they realize deep down inside themselves that they may have a problem with alcohol too? So they label you the alcoholic as some form of personal denial.
At least for me I noticed the people who were most uncomfortable with my sobriety were my associates (notice I do not call them friends) who drank the most. My real friends still wanted to see me even without a drink in my hand.

Congrats on a year!!! Thats a big deal! I hope you're rewarding yourself.
I second what AAPJ said and add: You can't control them or others. You can only control your own actions.
Their discomfort with your choices is not your problem, it's theirs.
CJ.
