Athletes and Celebrities Destroyed by Addiction
I was just reading online about various sports stars and celebrities who ruined their careers with alcohol, drugs and gambling. It is amazing how powerful the impulse for self gratification is that these people would give up everything for a drink, drug or bet.

Wow I didn't know. I thought you had to be really healthy to be an athlete. I did read about olympic athletes partying pretty hard but I figured it was celebratory not habitual. I cannot fathom working out at all with a hangover. I could hardly get coffee and food some days, that alone felt like a marathon.

Basketball players? How about David Thompson. (coke and booze)
Chris Mullins
Baseball - Billy Martin.
Compared to Martin all out boozing friend and teammate Micky Mantle was minor league.
Rock and Roll -Alice Cooper (30 plus years sober)
From his autobiography...The year 1972 is just a puddle of VO in my head. I hated the mornings. I had terrible headaches and shakes and the only cure was more VO. I was only twenty-three years old and I looked forty.

I remember seeing a re-run of Roy Firestone's interview with Mickey Mantle where Mickey talked about his alcoholism and his sons and he cried. I was about 2 months sober and very raw emotionally. I cried too. Powerful moment to hear The Mick being so open and honest about everything.
