All any of us have is today a daily reprieve it doesn't matter how much time you have in it doesn't matter how little it's the quality of your recovery not the quantity of days there are many suffering alcoholics who are newcomers and old timers sober just means not drunk how long have we been in recovery is the question and today is the only day that matters
if you don't think time sober means anything
Once when I didn't have much sober time I was in an AA meeting and an Old Timer shared, "if you don't think time sober means anything then try getting some !"
Man did that statement give me one big resentment.
Maybe it even kept me sober a few more days.
But, today his remark made seems to make much sense to me.

I keep thinking I've been sober now for about 10 years. I know I stopped drinking in 2004 and was sober til about 2008 when I drank one evening and one morning (a glass) and poured the booze down the drain and haven't had anything since.
Is that a lapse or a relapse. It doesn't really matter to me except when I try to say how long I've been sober to someone else.
I also feel that stretches of that has been dry drunk. Anyway, these days I say 'about ten years'.

No, It is not hard, but I must be aware of the fact that once I get complacent about my recovery, there is danger to fall back into it. It was hard for the first few years though, but it got a little easier every day after about 3 months. Plus, I made no secret to the world that I was in recovery, trying to keep that secret would have been to much stress for me. I was shameful at first, but then it hit me, who in the world would try to make me feel bad for being a success story. That is exactly what I would ask someone who would belittle or try to shame me. It stopped that very quickly. Keep your head up my friend, the best is yet to come.
You really did. It took someone from us at the age of 33. The average amount of time it steals from the addict is along the lines of 30 years. That's enough time to make it so people have to bury their kids because of this.
