Do you still use pubs/bars as a location marker ?
Do you still use pubs/bars as a location marker ?
Was thinking about this the other day when I was going snooker
Cab driver: Where to ?
Me: O'sullivan's snooker club please
Cab driver: Where's that ?
Me: you know the fox and hound ?
Cab driver: yes !
Me: opposite that
Just wondering does anyone here still locate by pub/bar location

Yes, most people know where the good bars are. I don't see it as that big a deal. Although some of my family members, who are very conservative, would shutter at the idea of doing such a thing. They would rather use a church or historical landmark. Makes me cringe.

Was just hearing about that at an AA meeting last Sunday.
Normal / Social drinkers would never see their town, city marked out by pubs & bars.
They wouldn't even remember the name of somewhere they drank much past 6 months.
I could still reel off a list of 50 or 60 places "by name" that I used to drink in 20 years ago in the town I grew up in.

That's funny whalebelow, I've never considered that.
I actually bought a condo several years ago due to it's proximity to my favorite bar, along with tens of others in the downtown of a large metropolitan areas. I liked not having to drive home - i could drink as much as i wanted. I suppose this highlights the difference between alcoholic vs. non-alcoholic thinking.

" Do you still use pubs/bars as a location marker ?"
I find this question very similar to the old...........: Do you still beat your wife (spouse)?
For me at least, they're both unanswerable.......... I never beat my spouse, and I never used pubs/bars as location markers.

When giving directions, I use whatever landmark makes it easiest to communicate directions.
Pubs are often located on corners so they get used as landmarks.
But so are Cafe's and Banks so they also get used as landmarks.
In some towns it seems there is a pub on every corner, so they are like road signs -- only more obvious.
I think, alcoholic or not, we use them as landmarks simply because they are landmarks.

It's kinda self-explanatory. If a person NEVER used pubs/bars as location markers, they could not answer that quesstion......not 'yes,' as they're not doing so, and not 'no' as they never did (remember, the 'still' in the question implies that the person did do this at one time). So, for some, it's an unanswerable question because the only answers would be 'yes' or 'no' and neither would apply.
Gottit?
