Question for Alcoholics in recovery

My partner has been having alcoholic seizures since the end of last year , at least one a month.

Has anyone who is now recovering had these seizures during their alcoholism but found now that they are recovering that the seizures don't occur anymore?

I'm just worried that even if he does stop drinking that he will continue to have them as has been having them for some time now.

Any replies appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi starlight

It's really important (I can't stress how important) that your partner sees a Dr.
Only a Dr will be able to decide whats causing the seizures.

Not to alarm you, but seizures can be fatal - regardless of whether these seizures are alcoholic or not, it really is in your partners best interests to stop drinking.

(the above) that's of most importance

seizures usually stop when the alcoholic stops drinking
unless one has done some permanent damage to themselves
or in some other cases
people do come down with different aliments at times

He's been seeing a neurologist for the seizures since way back last year , had ct scan , eeg etc all came back fine, Doctors can't say for certain whether it's epilepsy related or alcohol related.

Personally I don't think it's epilepsy, he tends to have them when he suddenly stops drinking or cut down too rapidly.

Yep watching ur partner have a seizure is horrible wouldn't wish it on anyone! Having to wait n see if it stops b4 4 mins and if he regains conciousness , and having to reassure him when he comes around confused and frightened and can't remember anything! Would do anything to make them go away for him!

He's just not stopped drinking long enough, if he had then may be easier to distinguish between epilepsy n alcohol related seizures. But also have been told when someone starts having alcoholic seizures and they stop drinking , are in recovery that they can still have seizures because their brain/body is so used to it by then , if you know what I mean?!

He has epilepsy meds but try all my might he wont take them, what can i do shove them down his throat.

He's had 2 minor head injuries because of these seizures and bitten his tongue quite badly on few other occasions.

It sucks, wish I could make it better for him!

As you know we cannot give medical advice here - and as others said, please make sure there is a medical professional involved, this is very dangerous.

The reason I quoted you above is that the same thing happened to me when I withdrew from alcohol. I had three seizures in 8 months. Each time the doctor scanned me and didn't find any epilepsy, etc, had all the scans. My family was asked if I was an alcoholic, and they said "no", because they did not know the extent of my drinking. I kept trying to explain the seizures as some kind of "freak thing" or "allergy", and I kept drinking and living my life in the same fashion.

My last seizure almost killed me.

Your loved one needs to make changes, right now.

All the best.

Doctor for sure!
In my early alcoholism I had 2 convulsions.
Many decades past later and no re occurences.
Could be non alcohol related so get him to a doctor!

I also had seizures. I have also seen a neurologist.

Because I also suffered from myoclonic jerks, I take some medication at night. I have quit drinking and the jerks have cleared up.

My sister has grand mal seizures as a result from alcohol use/withdrawal. Grand mal usually and the scariest thing I have ever seen. She is still drinking and still has them from time to time. Last one about a month ago.

I hope your partner gets help!
