don't know what you got till the well runs dry

had an old friend at work who used to always tell me
"you don't know what you got till the well runs dry"
he was watching my life slip away due to my drinking
he cared for my girlfriend of the time very much
he was trying to tell me
you won't be a happy camper when she's gone
did I heed his advise
no
and he was right
when she left me due to my drinking
I was yet again crying in my beer

many years later I bought a house that had a water well
in time the well went dry
I thought back to my old friend that had died
once again his faithful words ran true

"you don't know what you got till the well runs dry"

so many times in the alcoholics life
good close friends will try to give them a clue
of what's happening to them
many things on the line due to their drinking
but
they seem to be blinded
don't realize what they have until the well runs dry

have a good sober day

How wonderful it is now to practice appreciating things in the moment.

Did the well go dry?

How many times will the drunk put before their job and family the drink?
And then when they are all gone once again, to cry in ones beer.
Oh poor me, why did that happen to me, why did (they) do that to me?
Oh poor me, oh poor me, oh poor me yet another drink.

The spring of living water that brings happiness
can so fast become only a memory in the drunks mind.
Oh yes, I had this and I had that.
What I had don't seem to matter much today.
Yet, they will live in the past and wonder what happened to their lives.
If alcoholic?
The answer should be simple?
Oh yes, I should have sobered up.
A nice sober day wished for all,

Many of the water wells in our neighbor hood have dried up.
Ours is still barely meeting all of our needs.
I try to thank Him many times each day for the water provided.
All good things are given by Him.

Until i had a serious issue, the addiction won the mental battle .

Heavy physical addiction closed my mind to everything except when i could get drunk.

As my addiction progressed i was pushing up my tolerance for what was acceptable. For example, drinking heavily the night before my most important life funtions.

I was in a death spiral.

Thanks for the post.

Thanks for the post.

Powerful statement.. I had the exact same behavior!! It was only when I found a power greater than myself I was able to get off the train ride to hell..

Thanks for sharing!!

Don't know what page but, it talks about that in the AA Big Book. Right when I knew that I shouldn't drink before some special event, just had to have one or two or a few.

I think it's good for us to remember how free we truly are today.

Life as it is still has a few ups and downs but, today we have a fighting chance to make the best of it all.

There was no good fight when I (we) were drinking.
