Is there any chance you might be able to read this book, when you sober up tomorrow? Using Amazon's "look inside" feature you can read quite a bit of it. Forward to Part 1 - that is where the good stuff starts. The book: Rational Recovery: The New Cure for Substance Addiction: Jack Trimpey: 9780671528584: Amazon.com: Books (you can read quite a bit of it for free right on Amazon's site).

Our stories may not be the same, but here is mine and also how that book helped me from my helpless feelings and of feeling worthless because I just couldn't stop - even though I knew I wanted (needed) too. Like a robot, I just kept drinking.

All my best.

Tammy

I can relate - I have withdrawal symptoms when I don't drink and I start to feel very nauseous and sick and I start dry heaving in the bathroom until I just have a damn drink!! It's really difficult. You shouldn't feel those things about yourselves, you're a human being, we all make mistakes and you need to love yourself. Also, it's OK to drink a little at this point because if you didn't you'd go through withdrawal and could possibly have a fatal seizure - Have you thought about going inpatient somewhere or any place you can get safely detoxed?

I have thought about it but in this country its really hard and takes ages to get in. The GP will under NO circumstances let me do a home detox because of the risk of people taking all the librium, this isn't just me. The UK just doesn't seem to do home detoxs.

I know how you feel. I live in New York now but I was born and raised in London, and sometimes the NHS system is reeeaaalllly confusing and can make you wait up to months (or atleast thats what happened to me) Is there anyway you can go to an ER and tell them you're suffering and let them safely detox you there?

Hmmm I am so sorry to hear that...they shouldn't be allowed to do that. For now at least I'd say try tracking how many drinks you are having, and when you stop feeling sick, stop drinking. If you're prescribed benzo's those can really help too. You're gonna want to drink more to get that drunk feeling we all love, but for now I'd say have a family member or someone close to you help you with that to keep you as healthy as possible - That's what I'm currently trying to do

It is not mentally impossible. It is mentally difficult.

Are the NHS doing that oh so useful 'just cut down' method with you?

It is not mentally impossible to go cold turkey Albmwman, but it does help to have a lot of support and some methods to help deal with cravings. There will be some physical symptoms which will be unpleasant which you need to talk to a doctor about but there is a lot of help for the mental side of addiction. Have you considered going to an AA meeting before? Or looking into something like AVRT or SMART? x

When you said you started feeling really bad,
you got a can. Where was that can? To begin
a recovery program to help not drink that day
would mean removing the temptation out of
reach. Meaning to remove it completely from
the home, out of the refrigerator.

That way if you are feeling ill, you wouldn't
have alcohol to reach for but rather a can of
soup, crackers, ice cream, or something
healthier and wouldnt make you feel worse
than you already are.

I strongly suggest you contact your local AA.

It saved my life, might just be the ticket for you as well.

All the best.

Took me a total of 4 days to feel human after my last binge. Drank so much squash and spent all my time shivering and shaking. I'm now ending my 7th day of no alcohol, have reconnected to my friends in AA and will be going back to a meeting tomorrow evening.
Mate, you don't have to live like this. You can stop the vicious cycle and step off anytime you choose.
I just hope that you find the strength before it's too late
Keep posting, it does help to let it out
