going to a gig in recovery?
I want to go to a music concert soon and I know I'll be with 3 other people who will be drinking a fair amount of booze....
The temptation might be too much for me....
would you go or stay at home if you were me?

I suppose is 1 night of good music worth risking it all......no.
On the other hand if I went and didn't drink at all I would enjoy the music more as it's all taken in to the brain....not forgetting what songs they played etc.

I would take someone not drinking with me. My first concert dry was The Rolling Stones. Everyone else was drinking and smoking, I was having a crappy time. On top of that Mick was sick and cut the show short and then a riot started. Somehow I made it through not drinking, but the whole experience sucked. That was the last time I went with a group who main objective was to party, not for the music. It does get easier over time.
Yeah, I guess it depends on the show. If it is a smaller venue like a playhouse maybe it stays mellow enough but a big arena? People tailgating and such, that would make it hard.
The last gig I played, the Bass player kept offering me beer but I managed to turn it down. It wasn't easy though and a few days after I gave in most likely from the earlier temptation. For me, I think it is better if I avoid it all together if I want to maintain my sobriety.

I've been to see Judas Priest and Hawkwind this year no problems .
If it's a problem then don't do it , i find the company i keep helps a lot , the crowd i hang with now have maybe one or two half pints of lager . I find lemonade more refreshing in a hot auditorium than i ever found alcohol .
My daft alkie brain could come up with hundreds of reasons to drink , it always gets trumped by the "i'm an alcoholic" counter argument .
Be true to yourself, man .
cheers M

All I did at concerts was drink, so when I quit drinking I stayed away. Even if I succeeded in not drinking, I would be thinking about it so much I wouldn't have appreciated the show.
There will be plenty of shows to see when you get a solid recovery under your feet.

Depends.
Over the last decade-plus, almost all my drinking has been in private so I have a history of going to concerts and other events sober, even being the designated driver.
Just saw ZZ Top a couple of weeks ago and it felt great being sober while others were trying desperately to get trashed on $9.00 plastic cups of beer!
Can you be designated driver? Warning: friends who are drinking while you're sober are, basically, stupid and immature-acting. You will have to play dorm monitor.

I have 3 shows coming up Fri, Sat, and Sun. 2 of which I have to attend for financial reasons. I am not going to drink, I already made that choice. It is set in stone. I will have my sober Bf with me, and that does help a bit as well. Lol-- he is kind of my "accountabilibuddy." (Butters)
