Fresh in Recovery, Now Roommate Wants Help
Hi!
After my 90 day journey of treatment and over 100 days sober, I have an alcoholic roommate who has been curious about my journey and who has flat out and tearfully asked for help.
He has been drinking since the age of 15. Today he is 41 years old. Hasn't a lot of friends. Is single. Waits tables for a living. Thats about it.
I know he wants help. He's never been to an A.A. meeting before. Knows nothing of the 12 steps. But I asked him if he'd like to go to a meeting with me tomorrow. He said he'll check it out. His main fears of quitting drinking are:
1) Wont be able to sleep
2) Wont know what to do with himself (hobbies, aspirations)
3) Will get the shakes
I asked him if he had insurance. Told him he may want to seek treatment or at least detox to help mitigate the PAWS. No insurance though there is a free treatment center in town with a 6 mo waiting list.
I told him to come check out A.A. with me. Aside from that, I'm not sure how else I could be of help to him. I'm vulnerable myself this early on in recovery. So tomorrow I'll be taking him to his first ever A.A. meeting. Wish him luck Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

Check and see if there is a short term de tox facility in
your town....the Salvation Army has free ones in many places...
I'm glad he is willing to go with you....however it's best not to
expect that he will quit and stay stopped.
When I began AA a few of my drinking friends did show interest
and I took them to meetings ...gave them literature.
Not one of them got sober during that time....1 did later.
Perhaps I planted a seed? Who knows?
If you have a sponsor....ask for guidance and read the BB..
Working With Others
All my best to both of you....

welp, theres a good chapter in the BB that deals with working with others. if them are the 3 things he's concerned about, then he's pretty good off. what will he do with himself if he doesnt stop drinkin( any hobbies/aspirations now?), would he rather not possible sleep for a while and go through withdrawls or die from alcoholism? is he willing to do whatever it takes to get sober?
if you have the big book, let him read it. go through it with him and discuss it some. how bout callin up some of the phone #'s ya got and havin some folks come over for a meeting?
