9 months sober
9 months sober
actually a few days passed, but I've been busy.
Some things that would not have happened back in my active (alchy) days...
Moved and renovated an old shed that was nearly torn down by city crews who were working on sewer line (shed was right above where they needed to dig). Repaired\replaced rotting siding on our garage and I (almost) have it ready for new paint.
Still taking care of my mother, who's health is improving and hopefully will get out of the wheelchair more often and walk better again.
Got out several times this month with cousins who I haven't seen in decades. Went to multiple public places, restaurants, an amusement park etc... I had some social anxiety issues, but not near what it used to be and not one thought about picking up a drink.
Talked with an old drinking buddy (still an active alcoholic), but I believe his mind may be changing as he told me of a (very hard drinking) old friend who now has over one year of sobriety. I was very grateful to hear of that.
The end of this month will bring;
First time being sober on the anniversary of my father's death (7 years).
First sober 'birth' birthday in 20+ years.
Taking my new wiener (8 week old, long haired dachshund) for his first check-up\shots.
Stay strong, Stay Sober.
Suicide was the only answer that used to jump into my head when I thought about changing myself or quitting the drink. Not anymore. My addiction was strong, but my high power is Herculean Strong.

Thank you all, I am really feeling well most days and I owe a whole lot of the credit to SR, the experiences expressed here by so many in various stages of recovery and working programs. I feel like I have more sober time than 9 months, guess that's a mix of how hard it really was early on and how long ago my mind got dead-set on quitting (end of 2010). Even during my long relapse last summer I would listen to the AA speaker tapes and absorb the passion in their voices, the clear message that recovery is possible and that all it takes is 'the first drink' to drag me back to that self-imposed slavery.
I have thought about getting another dog, companion for both our (almost) 2 year old dachshund and I for most of this year, lots of Chihuahuas around here, but I wanted another Dachshund. Am thankful I looked on c-list when I did, we've never had a long haired doxy, the lady 'selling' him was very nice to talk with and she is in my home town. I will keep her updated from time to time via email.
He was great at the vet's office today which always helps me, but he's now a bit sore where he got the shot.
