TODAY is MY day 1!

Enough is enough. Today I QUIT!

To make a very long story short.... I drink too much. Not to the point of getting ridiculously drunk, but have atleast 4-7 beer a day, EVERYDAY. I have to quit.

Reasons to quit;
1. Amazing 11 month old son deserves better
2. Amazing wife deserves better
3. I want to see my family grow, not end up sick eventually

I think I drink for a variety of reasons:
1. Family History
2. Anxiety and slightly depressed at times
3. I feel better after a few
4. I see very bad things with my job, and coping mechanism

Today is my first day! I plan to continue and update my journey on this thread as a means of keeping myself on track and accountable.
If I can make it to 1 week.....I should be on my way. I don't think I have gone more than a couple of days in a row in a LONG time.

Why today.......because I want to be 1 month sober for my sons first birthday!

Glad you came to the decision, cervelo

A note on a few thing.

2. Anxiety and slightly depressed at times - Alcohol actually increases Anxiety and depression - Remember that alcohol is a depressant on the body too.

3. I feel better after a few - Because your mental capability has been lessened by the alcohol to make you *think* that you feel better. When you're happy or feel great while sober, that's called being genuine. Also, "feeling better" doesn't include slurring, stumbling, and not acting like your true self .

4. I see very bad things with my job, and coping mechanism - Even if you drink, the problem STILL exists. How does alcohol help you cope with something? It doesn't! When you're sober, you can deal with situations as they come. If you could solve problems by drinking, you wouldn't be on SR.

Happy Birthday to your son and you made the best decision of your life.

EDIT - PS: "If I can make it to 1 week" - try being more positive and upbeat! "I will make it to 1 week"

Welcome cervelo - and congratulations on making a decision to get sober!

It's great that you're doing this when your son is so young. When I was drinking, it was hard to be totally connected to my friends and family. It took time to get used to being totally sober, but every day got a little better.

Stay connected to the support here - I still come here every day to keep sobriety front and center in my life.

What a great motive!!

Do you have a plan for sobriety? How will you do it? I found it impossible to do without a clear plan and some support: books, AA, this board, etc.

Best wishes to you and your lovely family!

Well, I lasted 3 days and had a couple of beers throwing me off course yet again.

Last evening I began again. No drinks at all! Not even a real craving surprisingly?
I kept very busy during the day, then after dinner I immediately went downstairs and jumped on my bike trainer for a very tough workout.

After my workout I hit the shower, fed and put down the baby then went to bed early to avoid any chance of a drink!

I didn't sleep the best, yet woke up feeling great? This is one of the best mornings I have had in a long time!

It was great to get in a quality workout....because normally I have to do it early, or the beer gets in the way and I don't begin it.

I do a lot of triathlons and find that my alcohol consumption really hampers the amount of hours that I put in training, therefore affecting my results!

Well, I will do the same tonight.....as soon as dinner is done, I will hit the treadmill for a n hour or so, put the baby down then myself to bed.

Lets hope this time I can continue with my plan.

FYI....This board is why I am trying to quit. The people on this board are amazing. I read posts and cant believe the accomplishments people had had, and the road they traveled to get there. Thank you everyone!

Congrats!

I have had bad anxiety even before I started to drink. Alcohol has made my anxiety sooo much worse. It completely messes with my body and the shakes and fears of becoming one day very sick makes it all worse. I choose to quit today also and I have a 1 and 3 year old son and they are my main source of motivation. They do not deserve a lazy drunk parent. I am hoping my sobriety will help improve my overall quality of life. I hope the same for you as well!! Good luck!

I found I needed more than exercise....if you find that too, I know you'll find suggestions of what else to try...

welcome back Cervelo

I had a couple days of light slip ups due to family over for early holiday get togethers...but drank very mildly, thanks to help from wife.

Today is now second day in a row with nothing!

Unreal how much sharper you feel in the morning without drinking the night before.

I must say I was a little cranky last evening....but not too bad. I got on the bike trainer and rode for an hour which really helped

Now to continue this trend!

Thank you everyone for the encouragement. Believe it or not...this is the best place for assistance I have ever found!
