I never understood the point of adding the cost of my drinking. I did this exercise several times in rehab. Alcohol is cheaper than illegal drugs and cigaretts. Of course, alcohol has cost me a lot in hospital bills, lawyers, court fines ect...

This quiz helped me with things other than the cost too. Your audit score shows how bad your drinking is...they say a score of 20+ should seek medical attention for their alcohol problems and I had a 24. lol Also, what I found out is that for females my age in the US, 40% have about one drink per week and 30% don't drink at all. That's 70% of females my age that barely even have a brush with alcohol every week. So much for me thinking I might be an "outcast" for not drinking. lol

Also, in a typical year of drinking like that, I've spent a total of 133 days worth under the influence. Also, I'm 6 times more likely to get mouth cancer, 10 times more likely to get throat cancer and 3 times more likely to get liver cancer. Yeah, I think abstinence and I will get along just fine!!
Hrm - how does one start with the "how much a drink costs" question?
I know I spent $40 every other day ($20 a day) on a 1.75 liter of scotch, so $7,300 a year.
How would you calculate that to a per-drink cost in order to do the quiz?

@ Aegian a 'drink' of liquor is measured in 1.5oz. ... 1.75 liter = 60 ounces (rounded up) \ divide by 2 = 30 ounces (per day)\ $10 per 30 ounce \ 30 divided by 1.5 = 20 drinks a day .... I've been wrong many times before though. LOL
(I filled mine out as I was at the begining of this year and before, drinking without any attempts to quit.. I also drank cheap\at home... Beer and never light beer.)
• You reported that you drank a total of 4576 drinks in the last year.
• You spent approximately $4576 in the last year, depending on where you drank (at home, in a bar, etc.).
• You consumed (on average) 1200 calories from alcohol on days that you drink. Based on the total amount of drinking you had enough alcohol to add roughly 130 pounds or 59.09 kilograms to your weight in the last year. Note: One drink has about 100 calories and 3,500 calories roughly equals 1 extra pound of weight.
Your AUDIT score is 27.

So I used about $2 a drink. That's on the low side but whatever. We all know the stuff costs a lot of money.

yes, Carol, I agree...priceless. It was astounding though when I had to do this in treatment how much those years had really cost...adding up the booze itself, plus legal fees, hospitals bills, psychatrists, fixing broken stuff (I was rather volatile)....all alcohol related. How could I have ever said I couldn't afford this or that for my children??? I could have bought them whatever they wanted with all that I spent....but it's ok because I ended up giving them the priceless gift of a cool non-drinking mom. The gift that keeps on giving

the audit score is what really got me. yep, i'm an alcoholic.
those stats are also surprising - I can't believe how many people don't drink. all of this "i'm an outcast b/c i don't drink" stuff is just the disease trying to get me to drum up self pity.

But what exactly is the point? So I drank away a brand new car or a down payment on a house. To me it just makes me feel worse. Alcohol is still a "cheap high" compared to illegal drugs.
