This is the spiritual malady described in the Big Book of AA. It exists independent of any external circumstances. This is what drives us back to the drink over and over again. Why do you think Charlie Sheen, who should be on top of the world, is killing himself one gram at a time. He's in just as much pain as you are without his fix.
