Because maybe real recovery for the real alcoholic is not about learning lessons? AA's Big Book describes non-alcoholic, hard drinkers as those that when they have sufficient reason (financial trouble, falling in love, warning from doctor, etc.) to quit, they can quit. They learn their lesson, and they stop doing the thing that causes harm.
For the real alkie, though, this almost never works. In spite of the hard lessons, I was unable to stop drinking. The lessons got harder and harder to take, and my drinking got worse and worse. It's the opposite reaction of a non-alcoholic person.
Some time without drinking did not get me to the point of recovered that the 12 Steps got me to.
